Moon rise, sun set

As we enter the first day of 2016, I offer a set of photographs I captured with my iPhone 6 the night before Christmas just outside the Little Bitty here in the Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood.

Elisabeth and George Three had just arrived for our celebration, carrying in their arms full of presents.

Moon over Dawn's house.

Moon over Dawn’s house.

While welcoming them, my dear wife Karen noticed the moon rising over our across-the-street neighbor Dawn’s house.

It looked full.

It looked beautiful, some 20 minutes past 4 p.m.

And back behind the other neighbors we say goodbye to the sun.

And back behind the other neighbors we say goodbye to the sun.

After capturing that image and making my way back inside through the side porch, I noticed the sun making its final retreat of the day off past the houses in the opposite direction, behind our backyard fence.

I think that scene, snapped less than a minute later, is so different in lighting but equally as lovely.

Which usually pulls you in more, rising moons or sunsets, and why? Can you share a story about your favorite full moon or sunset? Which photograph do you like better, and why?

  1. Beautiful images, Mark. I have captured many moon images on my smartphone, I am drawn to the full moon, I have to say, but I am also very partial to sunsets. I think what’s so wonderful about this set of photos is that the sun and moon were in the sky together at the same time. That feels special to me. 😊

  2. My favorites here are sunsets from Malibu. In F#cking Florida, though, the clouds made sunsets spectacular, and the ibis winging across put the finishing touch to Japanese prints.

My favorite was a sunrise: Haleakala, in Hawaii. It lived up to the hype.

Happy New Year, Mark! The best of everything to you and your two- and four-footed family!

  4. Eek – you lose your daylight at 4:20 – that’s so early. Of course I remember up in Seattle, it seemed to get dark in the winter before 4PM and then the only thing I could think about was getting in my nice warm bed – to hibernate (perhaps I was a bear in a former life). Cool photos!!!!!!
