As we prepare for Thanksgiving tomorrow, I got to thinking about things I’ve taken in around the Little Bitty in the Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood in the last year that have made my life richer in some way.
In fact, I picked a dozen such memories I’ve written about over the last year — one per month — as a recap for today’s Mark It Up community column for Syracuse Public Media site WAER.org.

Friday night, thousands will come together in Clinton Square for the annual tree lighting ceremony. I went over Monday afternoon with my iPhone 6 to take the photograph above of this year’s tall, wide pine, with the portable ice rink also just set up for months of use to come in front of it.
What events in your part of our world are you thankful for as we head to this holiday, and why? What makes your community a better place, and how do people show appreciation for it? What would you like to see in your community that you’ve noted elsewhere?
I’m thankful for unseasonably warm temperatures, adopted grandmothers, new boots, and banana muffins.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I have so much to be thankful for bro Mark, I couldn’t begin to list them here. I think top of the list would be peace of mind, and acceptance of all the bad things that have happened this past year. This makes it okay for my family as well, just to know everything in my life is okay now.
Happy Thanksgiving bro Mark.

We did indeed have a dusting of less than an inch one night, Van. But I think that may be shavings from the ice itself throughout the initial freezing process as they prepare for the opening tomorrow!

We have a huge tree lighting ceremony downtown and a few small ones here and there round the city. I enjoy seeing them, but seldom go during the lighting (too crowded.) I hope you and YDW Karen have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Mark 😀

Happy Thanksgiving, Mark. What a lovely photograph. How I miss that Upstate snow! I am thankful for so many things: my family, New York and California — my two faves, the ability to meet new friends here. And this wonderful country, with all its features, positive and less than. Mark, I am glad we “met”. Thank you for your camaraderie and this great blog.
