I told you how excited I was about my latest piece of freelance writing for Central New York The Good Life Magazine.
Baker High School junior Julia Goodwin’s smiling face makes the cover extremely attractive, does it not?
And I think editor Linda Bien and graphic designer Peter Allen put together a most memorable package surrounding my story about this engaging singer who’s already making a mark way beyond her home in Central New York.
If you live in the Syracuse area, the exceptionally attractive March edition, published by Syracuse Media Group, is available at newsstands.
As I’ve written here previously, Julia has performed on the big stage at the M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest and won the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Competition and competed through several rounds of “America’s Got Talent” on NBC.
At home with her parents and sister, she was a smart and down-to-earth teen.
Quite marvelous.
After he saw the magazine, her keyboardist father, John Goodwin, sent me a text genuinely thanking me for writing about his daughter, again demonstrating to me why she is this way.
I took a video of them performing together at Beatlecuse.
What’s the last magazine you’ve purchased on the newsstand, and why? What’s your favorite magazine, and why? When’s the last time somebody surprised and pleased you be expressing genuine, sincere manners, and what was the circumstance?
Great article, Mark – capturing the essence of Julia’s talents and personality. Her family is the best! It’s an absolute thrill for me when I get asked to support some of her musical ventures. Very few stars shine that brightly.

Thank you, Kevin. It’s refreshing to encounter young people guided by parents so grounded in humility, friendliness and a sense of talent and place in this world. It must be a treat to perform with John and Julia.

I am so proud of this article and weren’t you so excited to get so many glossy photos included in the article? I like your name being right there, Mark!
I read Prevention, Ladies Home Journal, Rolling Stone, AARP, Good Housekeeping and Family Circle. I just filled out an amazing subscription rate of less than $1 per “Reader’s Digest.” This was always one of my favorites in the past…. smiles!

Very nice, Mr. B. She has a very lovely voice and seems like she is grounded and as you mention, has the right attitude and grace she must get from her family. Pretty impressive for a junior in HS! 🙂

I know, Mrs.B. When we were juniors in high school we weren’t quite this advanced, were we? ‘Well, maybe you were, but not me quite yet 😉

I may have been “developed” but certainly not advanced nor this poised! I was still shy back then. 🙂

Congrats on another fabulous job well done Mark! It’s been a long time since I’ve gone and purchased a magazine from a stand. But we still have some sports magazines delivered to the house.
As far as manners go, I am thanked at work often. And I try to thank as many people as I can for their help and their professionalism. My children and nieces often tell me when they are complimented on their children’s manners. I remember those days as a parent. It makes you feel good, knowing you’re passing on what you were taught.
And I’m playing this video as I type. 🙂 Amazing. 🙂

I get thanked after my writing tasks often, too, my buddy Colleen. You and I are fortunate. Hey, I’m glad you like the video of Julia singing with her dad’s band. I love that connection there, too. When she sings around here as “Julia Goodwin,” he is her keyboard player and puts her band together with many of these same musicians. It’s a great relationship.

The supermarket checkout line is a final frontier, Chuck. Good point there. I’m glad you like these kinds of stories, too. Thanks, and have a good Sunday morning. I hope we both can garden soon.

I love these kinds of stories. As for magazines, I can’t recall the last time I bought one, but it was likely a gardening magazine when I stopped in a grocery store for lunch sometime. I like to read when I eat.

I recall that post Mark and the beauty of her singing. She’s on the right track and it sounds like she has her support group lined up behind her. The latest video offering in this post is just further confirmation of how amazing her singing is. She seems to be right on target with building her career and maintaining a sane life style. Thanks so much for sharing this Mark.

I think you hit an important point, Paul. Maintaining a solid base now is important for her to build even more success later, I think too. And wow, can that teenager sing.
