How narrow is South Padre Island, you wonder?
In one swift morning my walk carried me from the Gulf of Mexico to the east to the lagoon to the west, all taking the block on which our rental house sat.
It took me, maybe, five minutes to get from one body of water to another, and that was with a pause for traffic to clear at the very busy boulevard.
I discovered this side of the island was bordered not with a beach but with docks.
Residents did what they could.
The lagoon-side houses had charm, yes.
The view of the sun amazed from this side of the island, too.
