My dear wife Karen and I are trying the restaurants around A Bitty Better in the Liverpool neighborhood of Galeville slowly but surely.
A recent weekend search for a good breakfast led us down Old Liverpool Road, just short of the railroad tracks, to the American Diner.
The owners are proud of their love for their country.
The decor, comfortable, says a lot.
Our waitress was friendly. The customers around us were relaxed.
Now, do I agree politically with everything I read on the walls and the menu? No, I do not.
Yet I thoroughly enjoyed the eggs, bacon and hash browns. My pancakes were a bit lumpy, however. Karen loved her pumpkin pancakes. And there you have it.
Last time out, we went to old favorite the Gardenview. Next time, we’ll try the Lakeview, the diner in the bowling alley.
Could you separate your politics from your food? What do you think of the American Diner’s decor? What do you think about so many sayings on the menu?
I couldn’t stomach the outright hostility. I am a die hard left winger–but I don’t go out of my way to demonize folks like this guy. Plus–he is a bit of a hypocrite–don’t you remember how he was convicted of welfare fraud recently? http://www.syracuse.com/crime/index.ssf/2016/06/owner_of_diner_whose_menu_lampoons_obama_guilty_in_welfare_fraud_case.html

I didn’t know about the case before the visit, Phil.

I try to put my money and my values in the same direction, so no, I wouldn’t eat there.

I didn’t know what it was like before we went there, Jay. My tour of new places …

I don’t think I’d be able to swallow the food after reading the stuff at the top of the menu…

They put it right out there, Leigh.

If the food is good, I can forgive (nearly) everything!

Are you sure that’s not in Texas? They would make money hand over fist here. I welcome them!

I don’t think I will eat there. I don’t have a problem with their beliefs and even agree with some of them, but the way they put them out there, I feel they are saying you are not welcome if you don’t agree with them.

I wouldn’t try disagreeing, Cynthia. I was there to eat only.

There are many fine places to eat in the greater Syracuse area. I shall seek them out (full disclosure: when I’m in Liverpool I usually just eat at my sister’s house). I’m sure this diner does a booming business, between folks who agree with them wholeheartedly and those who, like you, are only there for the food. They won’t miss little me!

It wasn’t quite full, Cynthia. I was surprised by the full-on press of the politics, really. I just want good food.

Good food is good, and I love checking out and supporting the locally-owned eateries.

it depends on how strongly you feel about the political climate. always worth a try i say, maybe find a middle ground, though it sounds like they’ve pretty much decided how they feel )

The people were friendly. I did not bring up politics, Beth. Not my thing to discuss with strangers.

At least, they are being honest. Is it reflected in the quality of the food ???

Yes, the food was good, mostly, Van. The pancakes were just fair in my taste.
