Again a cluster of folks in the Canyon at Syracuse mega shopping, dining and entertainment complex Destiny USA slowed down the walk of my dear wife Karen and I as we went to watch the movie for my weekly review.
This time the young and not-so were gathered around a track designed for speed and the vehicles that would go zooming down its path.
We’d walked into a local troop’s edition of the Girl Scouts Grand Prix, something I’d never heard a word about in my life.
The line of model cars made and decorated Pinewood Derby style — I’ve seen the wood-making kits and a demonstration table set up in the store where I work — surely impressed me.
The track awaiting a race was a nice sight as well. We had things to do, including a shift at said store for me, so I didn’t get to see any of the cars barrel down that strip. Dagnabbit.
Good work, I say. Winners, all.
Have you heard or seen these derby races, and if so, where and how? Have you made a model in your life, and if so, when and what? What’s your favorite race car, and why?
Fun for girls, too! Jeez, it’s about time! 🙂
My son did the pinewood derby stuff when he was younger. The Mister was much more involved than I, and mostly I remember a lot of boy scout dads took over and ruined it for the kids who did their own. You know, same kinda parents who do their kids’ science projects or scream from the sidelines? The ones in your photo look a lot more authentic.

Not much worth it if the parent does the heavy lifting, as you point out, Joey. I think the girls made these cars. Oh, how I hope the girls made these cars. 🙂

I used to love making model cars and planes and boats. Made a model of the Mississippi Queen which took me forever to finish. Was never into dolls but sure did like cars when I was a kid. I wanted to be a race car driver when I grew up – but girls didn’t do that back when I was a kid. So I just pretend I am a race car driver when I am out and about. 6 speed manual shift, turbo – watch out here I come. So this is really cool!!!!

Looks like fun. Nothing wrong with girls getting into model cars. One of my daughters was really into the Hot Wheels cars when she was young. We had some of the sets, too, like the parking garage with that ramp the cars could go down. She and her dad had a great time with them.

Never heard of that for Girl Scouts…just remember the Pinewood Derby my brother used to do when he was in Boy Scouts. Wish there had been something like that when I was a Girl Scout. Looks like a lot of fun!
