The Sammys wants your best work

The Sammys, all shined up before being handed to the winners.

The Sammys, all shined up before being handed to the winners last year.

‘Tis the season to think about awards shows.

Organizers are asking for the best work from Syracuse-area musicians and producers again.

The Syracuse Area Music Awards has put out its annual application for submissions for the 2016 edition of the show that’s affectionately called the Sammys.

The impressive black trophies will be handed out March 4, 2016, once again in The Palace Theater on James Street in Syracuse, N.Y.

Perhaps I shall be asked to present one of the awards again. I appreciate seeing the happiness in the faces of all involved. And in March of 2014 I was on the receiving end of a Founders Award, designated by Frank Malfitano, the man who started this whole big deal in 1993, who decided to honor me for the 21 years I spent as music writer and critic for the big daily. It’s both glorious and a tad frightening to step to the stage on the receiving end.

Here’s the news release sent out by the Sammys committee and chair Liz Nowak:

The SAMMY’s Committee is excited to announce that plans are in the works for the 2016 Syracuse Area Music Awards show Presented by World of Beer.

The two-day event is slated for Thursday, March 3, 2016, SAMMY Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Upstairs at the Dino.

The SAMMY Awards Show will be Friday, March 4, 2016, at The Palace Theater on James Street in Syracuse, N.Y.

The 2015 SAMMY Awards Show & the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony were both “SOLD OUT” with musicians and supporters of local music in attendance.

Musicians, Bands and Artists are encouraged to submit their recordings released during 2015. Download the official submission forms and instructions are now available online.

Recordings commercially released between January 1, 2015 – December 31, 2015 are eligible for submissision.

Tickets to both events will go on sale in February 2016.

Which is your favorite awards show, and why? Have you ever submitted a work for an awards show, and if so, what was it and why were you proud of it? Have you ever had to make a speech in front of a lot of people, and if so, did you practice or do it off the top of your head?

  1. i’ve never been nominated for an award to be presented at a show. when in advertising, i won some from studios for my work on film promotion, but all done without a stage ) i think that’s so cool that you received one, and gave one out, and i would be terrified to be on either end of that equation.

  2. That’s so cool that you got you received an award. I can’t say I have ever received an award or had to make an acceptance speech. One of my young patients gave me an aloe plant that he had grown all by himself. That was really nice, that is usually what my awards consist of, drawings and little plants…stuff like that.

    • At the start of my public speaking career, I was a wreck, Van. I grew more comfortable with time and frequency, I guess is the best way I can figure it. Still, as you so aptly put it, there was the pattern of sweat and rush and relief. 🙂
