A call I’d be making today if I were Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross would go something like this:
Hey, Rex, this is Daryl Gross, Syracuse AD. Sorry to hear your bad news from the Jets today. Yeah, tough season. Us, too.
Say, Happy New Year regardless. A good coach like you will find something pretty quick. Speaking of which, I know how much you’ve loved coming up here to Central New York with the Jets to Cortland State for a few weeks of training camp for a couple of seasons. Yeah, it’s beautiful and the people are really friendly.
Did you ever come up to Syracuse on a free night? Eat some barbecue at the Dinosaur? Take a look a the Carrier Dome as you drove by? Thought about how’d you pitch the young guys your son’s age to come play college football indoors, in the ACC?
Yeah, I’d love to hear what newly unemployed Rex Ryan’s side would be in that conversation.
Sorry, Scott Shafer, but that union would surely stir up some excitement around these parts for the 2015 season.
I guess I’m not above starting a rumor.
OK, Syracuse football fans, would you want Rex Ryan as the Orange football coach? Why or why not? What do you think his next job will be?
Here’s the link to the photo of Rex Ryan.

Having him coach would be one way to keep Syracuse in the news on an ongoing basis. Although you probably have fewer media outlets up there. 🙂

Rex went to the Buffalo Bills, as you probably know, being a Lions fan, Cat. Great move for Rex and the Bills.
We do have fewer media outlets up here, yes, and one major outlet changed drastically in the past two years. 😦

Ahh, yes. The infamous conversation over who gets the job. Nebraska started that one a few weeks ago, as well. Yikes. Those Husker fans have serious opinions, Chum.

Yeah. But Syracuse has it’s coach so I was pretty devious here, Red.

Um….. Good letter, Mark? 😉 (I guess if I were sports-minded, I’d understand what’s going on here.)

I’ve been thinking about all the excitement over your way, Beth. Harbaugh back in his college town. Oh, boy. The Big Ten has been changed now. Congratulations. Enjoy the welcome home festivities!
Important day for my Terps, too. First ever Big Ten basketball game, at Sparty at 5 p.m., bowl game vs. Stanford out in Santa Clara at 10 p.m. I have to take a nap I think so I can make the end of that one. 🙂

Big time baskeball fun. Hard for you to stay neutral, I think, the way Wolverines feel about Spartans. 🙂

Rex is a bit of a weirdo but he’s not a bad coach. He was saddled with mediocre QBs and a front office filled with meddling morons. Syracuse could do a lot worse than Rex.

That’s why I would look at college positions if I were Rex. He could use his charm to get his own players and woo alumni contributors and never have a meddling GM again, Mark.

In the paper this morning, they’re saying he’d be a great color commentator in broadcasts but I’m not convinced he’s ready to be out to pasture like that.

Maybe take one year behind the mike to recharge because this season stole his soul.

Mark, I must confess I had no idea who Rex was until I read your post. Jet’s not doing well, huh? I only follow SU basketball, and a little of their football. And Olympic swimming, in case they need me for a fill-in. 😉

As you know Mark, I don’t really follow any sports but I have lived long enough to know that the end of something is usually the beginning of something else, so who knows what the future might hold for Rex…
and you…
and for that matter…me! ❤

I’m so glad the Jets are free of Rex and Idzik. You may be right, though. He could be an excellent college coach. He knows how to run a defense, that’s for sure!

i will have to research who you are talking about but in Australia, even our sports coaches are overpaid. Although i have been watching a tv show called”sound FX” it seems to be about football players and coaches miked up and what they really do say. it is interesting.

Good of you to dream big for the squeezed Orange. He’d be a better fit for your Turtles (talk about dreaming LARGE) but… Rex is the perfect fit for the hapless Raiders.

I wanted to start folks thinking, Mike. I like the way your mind is going because Rex deserves more than a DC slot. Idzik was more the culprit these last two seasons of my Jets’ dismay, in my opinion, anyway. As far as my Terps go, I was livid after our collapse vs. Fridge and Rutgers but Maryland Nation seems to have totally forgiven Randy after receiving the very gracious San Francisco-area bowl bid against Stanford tomorrow night. If C.J. Brown gets his legs going and Stefan Diggs and Dion Long spring free a time or two, we could be in for 48-45 type shootout.

Agree on the Idzik front. The players love Ryan. He just doesn’t have many NFL types. Can’t believe Harbaugh is bailing on the NFL. He must have an out in his contract for an NFL job. The cupboard is pretty bare in Michigan and he has to recruit against Urban who’s seen as a fun guy. Not forgetting about Sparty and ND either.

I think he sees his alma mater with Rose Bowl colored glasses for now. Green dollar fields.

Ah, what’s the big deal? Save a mil here, half a mil there, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Aren’t coaches over paid anyway? All they have to do is give each player a ball and tell him what part of the field to sit in while he tosses it around. Nobody gets hurt, and the uniforms stay clean. I think they should hire me for that job Mark. I could give each player his spot and his ball, and tell them each exactly what to do with it.

And BTW, orange is the official MS color, so if I coached for Syracuse I could wear my orange ribbon on my UK blue shirt.

Great color for the ribbon, Angie. And your shirt, too. Nice victory for Don’s ‘Cats yesterday. 😉

It used to be just sports, Angie, then it became big bidness. You know that, my friend, your son Don is in the middle of it with his big job at Kentucky.

Actually it’s my son-in-love, Bill, with the big job at UK. Don works in, dare I say it, Louisville, but not at the college. He wouldn’t ever sink that low.

The former 49ers head coach (as of yesterday) is heading to Michigan to coach the Wolverines for a measly $48 million. How’s he gonna survive on that?

Sweetheart contract from his alma mater. Now all he has to do is win 10 games a season and a bowl game, and beat hated Big Ten rival Ohio State at least every other season for the rest of his life. No pressure, huh, Doobster?
