Keep your head high and your eyes wide

Let it snow on Thanksgiving morning. I’m in my own backyard, says Ellie B aka Dogamous Pyle.

Snow kisses my backyard in the Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood as we stir on this Thanksgiving morn.

It covers the ground and the shed, and hangs on the boughs of those towering pines in the neighbor’s house behind.

Ellie B aka Dogamous Pyle welcomes the sight and the feel of it. She’s ready for an exciting and full holiday.

My dear wife Karen and I have told her that we’ll be joined for a big and thankful meal by the grown kids, Daryl and Elisabeth and her terrific fellow George. They’ve got to drive just a bit, 30 or so miles for Daryl and 50 for Elisabeth to collect George at his folks and double back, and the roads here in Central New York, they tend to get hilly and twisty. And so this dad will say, as so many of you will across these United States of America this morning, drive safely on your way.

Yes, all who still need to cover those last handful of miles to eat and appreciate and lay thanks for the company and graces of friends and family on this special day, please take care in the travel.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Fresh and it sure will be tasty after my dear wife Karen does her part.

I hope something like the feast above awaits you. The good folks at Wegmans rolled up their sleeves and whipped up a big package of fresh, and Karen and I picked it up last night. Turkey, still needing more time in the oven. Mashed pototoes and stuffing, greenbeen casserole and sweet potatoes, oh, my. Gravy. Cranberry sauce. Karen still has to complete the cooking with her important role today. We went this route last year, and it saved a bundle of time and worry. I’m all for that.

I still have a few minutes to hit publish, and then it’s time to put on the flat screen for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Yes, we’ll watch some football later, too. Oh, happy day of traditions.

Who will you be sharing your Thanksgiving Day with today, and is it the usual gang or a new crowd? What is the planned menu, and who is doing the cooking? What’s your favorite Thanksgiving ever, and why?

  1. If that food is good, then that’s a great idea! Saves a lot of mess and time! 😀 My sister and I both cook over two days. We had several friends. My son made a 15 minute appearance. I missed my daughter. But overall, it was a great day. 😀

  2. missed the parade as we were driving the 5 hours north to be with Larry’s parents, so was sorry to miss that. Good part was napping 3 of those hours–yay! We had the turkey, cranberries, stuffing, lefse, flatbread, Snickers Salad (candy bars in this salad), pumpkin pie thing going on. Full today, but still eating!

Enjoying the snow? More coming down today here, too.

    • Only a little bit of snow here today, Liz. Let’s talk. Larry’s parents live five hours NORTH of Minny/St. Paul? Good gravy. No wonder you have the city/country dichotomy going on. And, Snickers in a salad? Truly? No wonder you are still full today, my friend.

    • Ellie B is inside all the time except for her needed breaks to roam, wander, relieve herself, tangle with woodchucks and get skunked. All within a fenced 20 feet by 15 feet backyard. It gets too cold to stay out, yeah, Kerbey, and too many other animals in the nice weather, as we found out. 😦

  3. Mark, we had our share of snow yesterday as well – but fortunately, it didn’t disrupt our plans to travel to Baltimore and share Thanksgiving with friends. We had a wonderful feast. I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!

  4. Happy turkey day Mark and Karen! I’ve heard about those pre-prepared dinners and they sound really good. I’ve never seen one though. Was that 4 large containers of food? And if so, how many does it feed?

    • It was four large containers and a full bird. It fed five with four times left over than we ate, Paul. It was too much food. We will be eating leftovers. Eating. Eating. Eating. Thank you for asking.

  5. macy’s parade – wish I was there to watch that. I am all for having some of the load lifted when it comes to holiday cooking – it’s meant to be a holiday rather than a day spent in the kitchen. Hope you all had a great family time.
    The snow looks lovely.

  6. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, Mark! 🙂

I am home alone…which is a good thing. A truly stress-free holiday. Maybe I can get used to this after all, just me and the two feline fellas, a bunch of movies and plans to do nothing. Plus it is pouring in rain now, so even more motivation to stay in chill by staying warm.

  7. Thank you for this giving us this wonderful Thanksgiving post. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. We celebrate as a small family, keeping stress out of our Courier and Ives picture. We get out of bed in the morning when we naturally wake up, (or when the dog nudges us to get up.) enjoy a breakfast of bagels and lox, hold hands at the table as we share what we are thankful for, start roasting the turkey around 11:00, sneak a spoonful of the delicious cranberry sauce my daughter and I cooked the day before, steam the pumpkin for our pumpkin mousse dessert, and hug often.
    Happy thanksgiving!

  8. Happy T-day…. I do have a short drive but fortunately not in the snow! Just hope my car can deal with the treacherous 80 degree weather today!

  9. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! I do hope you enjoy that snow. 😀 We’ll be having a quiet day…just the three of us eating a ridiculous amount of food. I do the cooking, but I take “shortcuts.” For example, since I’m only cooking for 3, I’ll just be warming up a turkey breast instead of cooking a whole bird. We like to really focus our efforts where we feel like it matters…on pie. 🙂

  10. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family Mark. I am thankful for all of the small things in life, like getting up without falling. My feast will simply be whatever I find that I can swallow, and that doesn’t require standing very long, but I’m thankful for that because too many are without. Life has been good to me and I am thankful for it all. I hope you have a good day and don’t eat too much.
