Over at my weekly community blog for Syracuse Public Media site waer.org, I decided to voice a bit of dismay at the folks who like to say there’s nothing to do.
This was a good week for me to take my stance because …
Well, Friday through Monday carried a stupendous schedule. My dullest day was my movie review Saturday. Here are three special pictures of my Labor Day Weekend outings, latest first, one per visit. You can read my community blog and see more photos by clicking the link I’ll provide below the photos.
New York State Fair officials decided to turn the final day, Labor Day, into Dollar Day. They drew a record crowd of more than 125,000 people as a result. That’s a shot of the throng at Chevrolet Court awaiting the show by The Doobie Brothers.
A new post-game traditions on Sunday Syracuse Chiefs games allows kids of all ages to run the bases. On this final Sunday of the season, everybody was ramped up because the Chiefs won their division title for the first time in 25 years, and will have a home playoff game on Friday. After winning with a homer in the bottom of the ninth Sunday, kids ran the bases, kids lined up to go back in the stands after running, and kids are lined up to the outfield fence waiting there turn.
And the weekend fun started with the narrow escape by the Syracuse Orange over the Villanova Wildcats in the Carrier Dome Friday night, a football game the home squad could and should have lost to the lower-level squad in regulation and in overtime.
Quite the four days.
Here’s the link to take you over to waer.org. Earlybird warning. The photos usually don’t get posted there until 10 a.m. or so.

Do people complain that’s “there’s nothing to do” where you love, and are they right or wrong? What were the highlights of your Labor Day weekend? What do you have planned for this weekend?

I am envious, green with envy, but so, so happy you were able to attend and enjoy all things around you, Mark! How did you get up on Tuesday to go to work?!
I would have loved the Doobie Brothers. I got out of work later than hoped, so did not get to the movies, nor could I get someone to go see Night Rangers at the Marion Popcorn Festival, for Free!! I was dismayed, so went home and was so glad I got a chance to watch the Stand Up 2 Cancer, on television. I made a mistake publishing it first not in the way I wanted to do. It looks so much better in poetry list form, than I had it on the first way I pushed “Publish” and it went out not the best form… Anyway, loved this post about your Labor Day weekend, Mark!

Robin, thank you so much. I so wish you got the chance to see Night Ranger for free. Darn. Here’s a hint for you. Get back to your draftboard, make the changes you want and it update, and it will re-publish in the form you want it, no harm, no foul. Give it a try. Have a great remainder of your weekend.

Mark, there IS nothing to do here where I live. I drove to West Palm Beach over the weekend and shopped and ate at one of my favorite Tex-Mex restaurants. And walked around a lake and fed ducks. That was a lot more fun than this place. 😉 As for Syracuse, yes, you do have a lot of community activities there… I miss that kind of town. 🙂

Sorry to hear the dire news about where you live, Rachel. That is truly terrible. I feel lucky.

Only boring people are… oh, rats. Someone beat me to it. Well, it’s TRUE. We all have idle moments but there’s no excuse for being perpetually bored. I met Nick Hornby once and he told me you’re never bored or alone with a good book. Amen!

I mean, Mark, I cherish the too-few moments when I can be alone with a book or a magazine or a paper or just my thoughts! What’s boring about that?
The rest of the time I’m off doing stuff and learning about life, it seems.

Go Wildcats! Wait, they lost. 😦 Congrats on the win, Mr. B. I so agree with you on not liking hearing that there is nothing to do or when people say they are bored. Hello? Nothing is going to come and suddenly land on your lap, you gotta go out there and find it! It’s a pet peeve of mine, hearing people complain like that! You have to make your fun by doing, the fun doesn’t come to you nor does it owe you anything! How were the Doobie Brothers? Is Michael McDonald with the group?

The Wildcats were better than the Orange last Friday, though moral victories suck, Mrs. B. Yes, there is no reason to be bored in this land of ours. And, the Doobies sounded cool. No Michael.

Labor Day highlights looked great from here, Chum. Loads of rain for us. A swimming party to welcome all the new neighbors to the area. Loads of them. Sleep and a movie. Boring. Boring to some, but not bad.

That sounds like a welcoming break to me, Aud, not boring at all.

this looks like a whirlwind four days of fun. perfect walk off ending for your team, and the base running for kids is wonderful. dollar day is such a great idea, and i would have stood in line for the pizza villa sticks for sure. i think there is always a lot going on around us, if we just take the time to seek out activities of all kinds. have fun at the irish fest, that promises to be a good time, i’m sure. ) labor day weekend, i relaxed on the lake with friends, had a family bbq, and a dinner picnic date – all good !

Sounds like you had a great wind-down to get ready for the kinders, Beth. I know that you never have a shortage on your to-do list over your way. ))

Never heard of a shaved ribeye steak sandwich! Indeed it does look there is a lot to do there, but it also looks not 102 degrees, which can cause folks to drop like flies. I yearn for temperatures that allow thousands to eat fried pickles and push strollers without blistering in the sun. Streets here are empty. Hurry, October!

That is not very conducive for strolling, when the pickles fry on their own, Kerbey. It was high 80s temp and high 90s humidity, and people were dropping like flies here.
Yes, think slices of ribeye. Quite delish, it was.

So much for staying in, Mark. You’re a rock star 🙂 Yes, it drives me batty when I hear my kids say they’re bored. Wha’? In a gazillion year (perhaps I am overstating things a bit with “gazillion”), I could never run out of things to do. Books to read, movies to watch, conversations to have, articles to write, etc. etc.
Did you see the Doobie Bros. perform? I was at the Minnesota State Fair last week eating crazy food. A local brewery created a MinneDonut Beer for the fair and I loved it. Glass was even rimmed with sugar. Nice touch! It tasted faintly of donuts–a light beer, very yeasty.

That beer sounds, well, very Minnesotan. Nice!! I heard the Doobies more than saw them. Pretty clutch, still these decades later, Liz. Yeah, there’s so much to do that I’m angling for a rest day come winter. 🙂

They say only boring people are bored and I tend to agree with that. There is always tons to do in Richmond. Buy a newspaper and read the “Weekend” section….overwhelming amount of choices.

Good point Mark – there is always something interesting going on. Only those who consider it others’ responsibility to amuse them, cry “bored”. Great pics by the way. i just did some writing over the weekend, nothing spectacular but it certainly amused me. But I’m easlily amused – so they say, Ha!

It is a great blessing in life to easily amused, Paul. That means your mind is always working and making connections, is the way I look at it, my friend. 🙂

I think bored is a conceit. That people who say they are bored have not looked around. I think I better wait till my second cup of coffee lest my fingers get away from me.

People thought I was crazy for not going away on my vacation. I assured them that there’s plenty to do around here and keep me busy. I think people without imaginations are the ones who get bored the quickest…
