Two weeks to college football season, and the stuff is out

As the calendar to college football 2014 becomes thinner, the local sports store that tries so hard had the stops pulled out in Destiny USA, the full Friday out front display table devoted to our Syracuse Orange.

Let’s see what’s for sale at My Favorite Sports Store.

Would I want …

How many wins to bank on?

How many wins to bank on?

As season ticket holders, my dear wife Karen and I do not have many quarters left for an SU bank. Skip it.

Will there be a dry eye in the house?

The Terrible Towel was reserved for the Pittsburgh Steelers decades ago. This one is big enough for a golf bag, but might distract my putting eye in the background.

Getting warmer. Getting colder.

Getting warmer. Getting colder.

I might use the throw watching away games on TV at home if it was really cold out and nobody was visiting Karen and I. The slippers, not my style, any time of year.

I have a Maryland flag, and a big maybe.

I have a Maryland flag and no thank you.

Years ago, Karen bought me a Maryland flag just like this, and I flew it proudly on my side porch on college football Saturdays. Then we got our Syracuse season tickets. I still can’t pull the trigger on this one. As far as the microfiber cloth to clean my iPad and iPhone, I think my folded up bandana-pattern handkerchief works fine.

Shaped like a lineman.

The winner! My favorite merchandise was the interesting pair of Orange Gnomes. They might scare away critters in the front yard garden or the backyard butterfly garden of our Syracuse city home in the Eastwood neighborhood.

Which piece of college football merchandise screams your name? What kind of stuff do you put out in your house because it has an insignia on it, and where do you keep it displayed? What is the single most useless thing you own, and how did you obtain it?

  1. I agree with you… I liked the gnomes best by far! LOL! Stuff I have an insignia on?… Well, as for a SPORTS insignia (yes, me = sports!) is a Philly Soul jersey autographed by all the members on Bon Jovi which I have hanging in my room. Other insignia emblazoned stuff on display is also Bon Jovi related. 🙂 As far as useless stuff, if I don’t use it, I toss it. Actually, I have a collection of Monkees LPs which I don’t use because I have all the CDs. That’s about as useless as it gets. 🙂 Excellent post! 😀

  2. I would have never thought this but it turns out the most useless thing I own is my passport. At one point in time it was my assurance that I could return home. Now it turns out you don’t need it. In fact if you don’t have one you get all kinds of free stuff like housing, food, clothes, a college education, even free healthcare. Now I’m wondering why did I cheat myself out of all that free stuff by getting one?

  3. Ha! Gnomes , eh? Be careful Mark, GGLF might discover your gnome and stage an intervention. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_Gnome_Liberation_Front#Garden_Gnome_Liberation_Front

And if that isn’t bad enough, you know that gnomes are tribal creatures and you can never have just one : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Garden_gnomes_-_commonwealth_park_canberra.jpg

Ha! I generally try to avoid buying that sort of advertizing stuff, unless it’s useful or unless accompanying children insist. I do donate to teams though, especially kids teams.

May your garden gnome have a happy new home (do gnomes repel skunks?).

    • You always give me so much to think about, Paul. The Orange gnome still sits on that table, unless somebody else has purchased it. I did think twice, though. They would look nifty in my two gardens.
