My posts Saturday and Sunday about the M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest concentrated on the music.

Big time, big fun for the 32nd edition of the free-admission event.

For my weekly community blog for Syracuse public media site waer.org, I commented about how the return this summer to the rolling hills of Onondaga Community College brought the fest back to its best home.

The piece over there concentrates on photos away from the stage, such as my moon shot above. (Earlybird warning: The editors who administer that site aren’t usually able to post my photographs until after 10 a.m. on these Wednesday mornings, but I put the words up a bit earlier than publishing this one here.)

What’s your favorite place to see an outdoor music event, and why? Do you enjoy multiple-band outdoor music shows? For a free-admission show, do you think you’d prefer to go for the first band and stay the whole time, or wait for the headliner’s slot and show up then?

    In truth, the best outdoor music event I ever saw was in Diego Garcia, back when I was in the Navy. It was a USO show and of course we (us sailors) were somewhat of a captive audience. The band was mediocre, but the camaraderie of all the grateful sailors made the show for me. I mean, we were in the middle of the Indian Ocean and just happy to have a little slice of home there.
    And of course alcohol may have contributed to our merriment…

  2. I love seeing shows at Hershey Park in PA and a little field in Woostock, CT whose name I can’t remember. But love outdoor shows at pretty much anywhere up north. Here, not so much. Yes, I enjoy multiple band shows, and I always show up hours early to get a good spot, then camp there all day. 🙂 Great post! 😀

  5. In the old days, I would head to Blossom Music in a south east part of Cleveland, where they still play but the bands are more expensive. I loved the way the hills and the picnics were going, people interacting with each other… I also like the simple music that is performed free by the Delaware Fire Station, last Sunday it was ‘Razzamatazz,’ jazz music, Free but donations are collected. Later, there will be Morgan Treni and one of my friend, Steve Shaw’s sons singing bluesy music. She is one of my favorite ‘local musicians,’ but hope she makes it big! I love lying on a blanket, looking at the stars, listening to live music. I also like jumping around, dancing and acting like I am in the band, too! I am a ‘big kid’ at heart, as you may have guessed this, Mark! Glad you heard from one of the guys, maybe they can get together on Sat. or Sun.? Tell them they can ‘bend the rules,’ and time of day…. Smiles!

  6. i love music performed outdoors and this looks great. here, my favorite outdoor venue (for paid concerts) is meadow brook – on a green hill near a university campus, with seating under cover if desired, but i love to sit on the lawn and just take it all in. you can picnic there and have wine and kick off your shoes. wonderful. for free performances, like our jazz fest, we head to downtown detroit to hart plaza on the river, and i wander around to a variety of stages, i love to see a bit of everything. glad your new job is going well and sorry the golf team is missing you )

  8. Mr Mark,As elated we were about you finally pinning down work, the sadness hit us last night when Miss Bowers announced you were no longer a part of the golf league due to your new hours. We toasted you with a beer at the 19th hole!! Hopefully you can squeeze in a guest appearance or two before we end the season. You missed quite the battle last night as Bird and I matched pars and bogeys (and one birdie each) to a draw (40 I think). There was even a double rainbow on the last hole….Anyway, good luck in the new position and if you ever feel the need to get out and play nine, let us know. Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2014 11:13:42 +0000

    • Thanks, DJ. I surely will miss the Tuesday fun and games and 19th hole. But I do not leave the office until 5:30, alas … It sounds like a blast last night, from birdies to rainbow to beer. See you soon, somewhere, somehow, you and all of my league pals. 🙂
