On Nov. 6, it was golf weather in Syracuse

My last wish for golf season 2013 was granted Tuesday.

I got to play one more round of golf in Syracuse, N.Y., before the cold and snow settle in for good.

The day broke with the weather forecasters promising temperatures in the 60s, with sun until sometime in the afternoon.

I sent the text messages to the three good friends I played with in October.

Only Chris said he could make it. Kingpin and Dennis had to pass.

We met at 10 a.m. at Westvale, a convenient little tract on the western edge of greater Syracuse. The parking lot already hosted a dozen cars. There was a small line at both the first and 10th tees. I wasn’t the only one not ready to put the clubs away.

I started this season at Westvale seven months ago. How’s that for symmetry?

Chris and I both blasted our drives into the teeth of a strong wind, to the middle of the first fairway. All round, we figured a two-club difference into or with the wind. No matter. It was warm, and somewhat sunny. In fact, for Nov. 6 in Central New York, it was downright glorious.

Bonus Day, we agreed, plenty of times between the first tee and 18th green.

Chris hit more good shots. I sank three bombs, putts longer than 20 feet. The conversation was lively and amiable, par for the course, shall I say, for friends who’ve weathered decades together. It was a marvelous way to end the golf season.

I pulled back into our driveway quite satisfied. I took the clubs, shoes, and pull cart out of my trunk and lugged them to the back porch. That’s where they shall spend some time, until late March or early April, when I toss them lovingly back into the trunk to do it all over again.

Unless, of course, somehow this perennial Golden Snowball-winning city gets a stretch of 60s in December. Or January. February golf, anyone?

  2. Rachel, it was darn sporting of you to watch the four American guys tee off as they were crossing an item off the bucket list. Playing St. Andrews, indeed! You got to putt at St. Andrews. I am jealous of you, my friend lundygirl!

  3. This post reminds me of a day we spent in St Andrews, Scotland. A crowd gathered to watch four American guys tee off – total silence. They had come a long way and it was great to see four fairly middle aged men fulfilling a dream. One of them made a bit of a mess of his shot but I’m guessing he wasn’t used to crowd of tourists watching him play.
Speaking for myself, I made it to the separate putting green where we had a competitive family game. Now I tell people that I’ve played golf at St Andrews!
