Grace Potter had the big crowd singing and dancing with her Thursday night at the New York State Fair.
Ooh-La-La, indeed.
The singer, guitarist and keyboard player from Vermont led her oh-so-tight Nocturnals through a soaring set that hit all the right notes. The packed Chevy Court crowd was treated to a couple hours of top pop, ripping rock, true blues, gritty country gospel.
Favorite sing-alongs were “Paris (Ooh-La-La)” and the Tom Petty chestnut “American Girl.”
“Stars” was the slow-it-down ballad big moment.
And Potter made fans happy when she looked down from the stage and invited her fans to dance along with her many moves. Thousands had been bursting to do just that very thing all night, but were relegated to moving in front of their seats because state troopers were very good at their mandate of keeping the aisles clear. Once Potter said she wanted to see more, though, the dams burst. Fans pushed up to the front and made the sawdust-filled path their dance floor.
There they danced, through two happy encores.
It was a joyful opening night of 12 at the free-admission-with-fair-ticket outdoor stage.
