While many hockey fans in North America were waiting for the Winter Olympics men’s team gold medal game between bitter rivals squads from the United States and Canada, my dear wife Karen, terrific daughter Elisabeth, fantastic George Three and I drove the couple miles to downtown Syracuse the night before that big game to take in a skirmish between our hometown Crunch and the visiting Charlotte Checkers.

The game had everything, including a penalty shot for the home team, which … was blocked by the opposing goalie.
