Get ready

Taking a stance.

Concentration means so much when you’re trying to hit a baseball.

It was interesting to watch my Syracuse Mets hitters get ready in the what we call the warmup circle.

  1. Batter up! That warm up circle has interesting stories in my world, Mark. I’ll share sometime. Our opening weekend was 40 degrees with rain and even a bit of snow! I was under the weather, but cheered our Baby Birds to victory from inside! Have a great week!

      • I understand, Mark! I’m not on FB (I got off of it in 2018 and never looked back lol). But I’ll share the story here, as I’m sure other readers won’t care? In 2010, my youngest son was in the batter’s circle on a COLD spring night for practice. The hitter’s bat, a carbon/aluminum bat, BROKE in half twirling like a stick bomb, hitting Jay in the face. It “split” him from the chin up through part of his nose, knocked out 4 teeth (the trainer took the teeth to her house and placed them in a cup of milk-it saved 2 of them). Jay is 30. He didn’t go on to play college baseball and handled it all like a trooper; although it’s been hell for him. 13 surgeries, reconstruction, and just 2 years ago, brand new teeth on top (after a year of having to build up jaw bone, etc..) because 2 teeth “died”. His sinuses were “pushed” out quite a bit so he suffers with sinus issues and has to wear a Cpap to sleep. Just so many things that were impacted by his accident. I’ll never forget getting to the hospital and the entire team and the school superintendent were there. Their team went on to go to State tournament. The school bought a special helmet, 7 weeks after the accident, for Jay to wear so he could bat one more time his senior year. Boy, was I sitting on the edge when he laid down a left-handed bunt and rounded 1st after an overthrow. Yikes! He’s going to slide! He got a standing ovation! Whew! They went on to win 2nd in the State that year. So,…that’s my “warm up” circle story. Now, I have a very funny one about that same boy, age 6, a tiny young one who got hit where the sun doesn’t shine as he was catching behind home plate (did I tell you how TINY he is?). He grabbed himself, walked towards us, the parents, and said, “I told you Mom to buy me a cup!” YIKES! Well….at 6, ??? And tiny? Oh, the baseball memories. I love it! LOL

      • That is some story for sure, Karla. I’m so sorry that happened to Jay. And you! But I’m not surprised your family came through it like champions. Good reactions by those there helped at the time and afterward, it sounds like. Thank you for sharing.
