Enjoying Polish Night at the stadium

Happy us.

As the baseball season for our hometown Syracuse Mets winds down, we know we’ve still got a small pile of purchased vouchers to use before the final game.

We picked Polish Night last week.

We got there early enough to score our free jerseys out of the 1,000 handed out by the Triple-A organization. The color ranged between Syracuse orange and Polish red, I thought, as I pulled it over my head.

I had a good time listening to the Polish music played between innings. It brought back memories of growing up. My father played Polish music frequently, records on his stereo or radio programs from the set up on the kitchen counter. Yes, I can still sing along to The Pennsylvania Polka.

Great game sponsor.

Remarkably, the Polish-language lyrics to Sto Lat came back to me as it backed birthday wishes flashed on the big scoreboard.

I declared that the title did not, as the PA announcer declared, mean Happy Birthday in English.

Live long, live long, live 100 more years, was what my father told me, I said to my dear wife Karen, terrific daughter Elisabeth, awesome George Three and his mom, Sue. The song rang out at weddings and anniversaries, too, I recalled.

I smiled when Elisabeth Googled and out I was right.

Our place.

Yes, we enjoyed the baseball, too.
