We salute those that served us today.
Happy Memorial Day from A Bitty Better in the Liverpool, N.Y., neighborhood of Galeville.
My dear wife Karen and I included a flagpole yesterday among our holiday weekend purchases.
And when we got home, I mounted the bracket on the fence at the back of our driveway and proudly flew the flag I’ve been waiting to find a great place to rest on important occasions since we moved here last October.
No disrespect intended, but this is not the Stars and Stripes. Those are very proudly, and crisply, up high across the street at the Town of Salina offices.
No, I needed to proudly hang the banner of my University of Maryland Terrapins. I celebrate the good things of the sports squads that represent my alma mater. And hope for more come big game days.
Memorial Day Weekend is big in the college lacrosse world.
Yesterday, the Maryland women defeated Boston College to win the National Championship. The win allowed the top-ranked Terps to finish the season undefeated, 23 wins and no losses. That’s quite an achievement. Much applause here from Central New York.
And this afternoon, the Maryland men will tangle in Foxboro, Mass., with Big Ten mates Ohio State for their national title. The No. 1-ranked Terp men and No. 3-ranked Buckeyes have met twice before this season, Ohio State taking the regular season game and Maryland winning the league tournament title tilt. And so the rubber match will be for all the marbles.
I’ve written before on this blog how Maryland, though it makes the Final Four and even the championship game regularly, has not won the national title since 1975. That’s a drought. Some even call it college lacrosse’s jinx. I go with the Curse of the Ursino, named for Frank Urso, the All-American attackman from my home Long Island who led the Terps to that last national title.
I’ll be watching on ESPN come 1 p.m.
Go Terps Go!
congrats you your terp women and hope the men take it too! love your flag idea, as you can imagine, college flags are very big here. happy memorial day to you and yours )
