A skating day to the ‘T’

A business lunch took me to downtown Syracuse. I made sure I passed the ice rink in Clinton Square.

A few folks were taking advantage of our warm upstate New York December weather on a weekday afternoon.

Ice skating and December go hand in hand.

Ice skating and December go hand in hand.

It was unseasonably warm for a December day in Central New York.

Working up a sweat?

Working up a sweat?

I was still wearing my winter jacket as I snapped away with my iPad Air, though, as this young guy thought a T-shirt was all he needed on the ice.

Christmas season is upon us.

Christmas season is upon us.

I thought the blue skies, green holiday tree and tri-colored American flag sure made for a nice picture as our skater took in the scene himself.

Have you ever participated in an outdoor winter sport in shorts or a T-shirt, and if so, please explain. If you’re a skater, what’s your usual outfit of choice? Which is your favorite photo, and why?

  1. Hi bro Mark. Look who’s up early today. Or late yesterday — it’s all the same. I love all the pictures, so clear and crisp. I’m not much on sports at any time of year, but I have definitely gone outside in shirtsleeves during winter months. Shorts not so much because of my chicken legs, but all the time I was working for Hospice just never seemed to have time to grab a coat between running from car to house to car. Never made much sense to waste time with that.
We are having your weather also, but ours is more liquid than you seem to have. Could be in the future for you though. We get it from Tulsa, and send it on in your direction as quickly as possible. Enjoy.

    • Hi sis Angie. That’s true. Sometimes a coat is an afterthought no matter the temperature. I see outside my living room window a gray sky. No moisture yet. Letting Ellie B outside in the backyard, I know it’s still warm. Have a great Sunday down there.

      • It’s been a long time since Sunday bro Mark, and I’ve been so busy I haven’t noticed time passing. Are you ready for Christmas? I almost am, but I’ll still be working on things while the kids are arriving, which is not a new thing for me. Just seem to have too many things going at the same time, and it just doesn’t work out well this way. Have a great weekend.

  2. Got to love that ‘unseasonably’ warm thing when it happens Mark! When I lived in BC sometimes the sun felt so warm that I would go outside with just a t-shirt and sun glasses because the pure white snow was blinding. โค

  3. Well, I went running earlier today (Sunday) in bicycle shorts and a t-shirt, but I guess that’s not the same thing. I mean to take further advantage of this warm weather with a walk after dark to admire everybody’s Christmas lights. I’ll wear long pants and sleeves for that, since we shall walk at a leisurely pace. I hope you’re enjoying the season.

    • That’s a great memory, Van. I can recall moving to Maryland and standing outside in my shorts and T on Thanksgiving, thinking I had moved to the South. Well, it was, by definition and tradition, but more north I thought more and more. ๐Ÿ™‚ And that one day was an accident of Mother Nature. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I remember the first Christmas after we moved into our house 20 years ago. On Christmas Eve, my girls and I walked around the neighborhood admiring the lights on all the houses, and we were wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts because it was something like 70 degrees. My girls were somewhat bummed out about whether or not Santa’s sleigh could land without snow, but I explained Santa would just put rollers on the sleigh instead of skis. He managed to somehow get to our house that year, so all was Ok come Christmas morning.

  5. It’s been a long time since I’ve ice skated outside. Like, I think I was 4 or 5. I’m sure my parents bundled me up. Indoor skating I often wear a long sleeve tee and a sweater. I’ve never gotten good at ice skating, but I like it, probably because I like the cold ๐Ÿ™‚
It’s been unseasonably warm here as well. Yesterday I ran errands with the windows down in Bonnie Blue!

  6. I used to envy my college roommate way back when. She was from Colorado and would show me pics of her on the slopes over break in just a turtleneck and jeans while skiing. Sunny slopes, white powder. Your pics brought that back:). I’ll take it!

  7. A favorite picture and memory for me, which your picture today brought back, is of me skating with my children with all three of us wearing short-sleeve shirts. I have a skirt on and bare legs. It is their very first time ice-skating, they both took to it immediately–did not fall once. We are in Palm Springs. Indoor rink, of course!

In the picture, I look like I know how to skate–I am standing tall and straight, with firm ankles and forward-pointing feet–but actually, my sons on either side, with me holding their hands as if to steady them, are serving as MY “training skates”. Left on my own, I didn’t fall once, either, but skated in my usual gawk-ward fashion–bent over, as if facing a 90 mph headwind: Babe Klinker and the Lead Skates.
