If ever a man was born to play on a certain sports team, it is Steven Jakob Matz.
When the New York Mets take the field tonight in Queens, N.Y., hosting game four of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 24-year-old rookie left-hander will be on the pitching mound.
Let’s Go Mets! is the cheer that fans have chanted for their squad since the days of Shea Stadium, where the team became the really Amazing Mets in 1969, coming from last place the season prior to World Series champion.
Let’s Go Matz! can be the cheer for the pitcher who grew up in Stony Brook, some 40 miles east of Shea and its replacement Citi Field. He attended Ward Melville High School. That’s where I went …

If you know anybody with a name that’s perfect for their occupation or avocation, can you please share that nugget? Can you brag on anybody famous from your high school? Which teams are you pulling for during postseason baseball play, and why?

My high school hasn’t put a player on an MLB ballfield since Dal Maxvill in the 60’s. It’s a good bet Matz will have a better career than Dal had… though he’ll never have the chance to hit the first MLB grand slam outside of the United States.

Let’s go Matz/Mets indeed! Can’t pull for the Utleys. I confess I’m rooting for the Cubs, though!

Cubbies are a good story this season, Jim. I don’t blame you. How about Joe Madden for manager of the year?

Glad to see that the only bruising last night was with the Mets’ bats. Quite a show, Mark. ☺
