A week ago, I was sitting in downtown Syracuse listening to Mitch Mitchell discuss his introduction to broccoli.
Growing up military, he hadn’t tried it until his adult life, the fellow member of Central New York Bloggers said.
I nodded.
And I thought:
My citizen mother made me eat broccoli weekly like a drill sergeant, and I did not like it a bit, you lucky man.
Mitch, owner of not one but five blogs, chose his syracusewiki entry to include me on his list for a Creative Blog Award nomination list shortly after that meeting of Syracuse blogging minds. Even though my Awards closet is closed, I said yes to Mitch and will throw out my answers for his (and yours, I hope) curiosity. Thank you, Mitch, for thinking of me in your lively post I linked above.
Now, the rules for this particular award:
1. Thank and post the link of the person who nominated you.
2. Share five facts about yourself to your readers.
3. Nominate 10 to 20 blogs and notify them.
4. Post the rules so others know what they are.
OK, then.
Five Facts
1. See my childhood tussle with broccoli above. And yet now I enjoy broccoli more than cauliflower and way more than Brussel’s sprouts and mushrooms, but less than green beans, carrots and corn.
2. I moved to Syracuse from Maryland in August of 1983 so although I’m not a native, I’ll soon be living here 32/57ths of my life. I’m no math wizard, but I knew how to download a free calculator app to my iPad Air to figure out that I’ve lived roughly 56 percent of my life as a Central New Yorker. It feels like more. Way more.
3. I moan about the winters here as much as the next person. I’m tired of the snow and cold, for sure. I do not ski or snowmobile. I am fed up with driving in snow and blowing snow.
4. I love the spring, summers and falls here more than the next person. Playing golf at the many great golf courses, and walking in my Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood or Onondaga Lake Park or the Creekwalk with my dear wife Karen and Ellie B aka Dogamous Pyle makes me happy. Very, very happy.
5. My main interests are sports, music, movies and reading fiction. Mets/Jets/Islanders/Maryland Terps/Syracuse Orange/Chiefs/Crunch. Bruce Springsteen/Steely Dan/Santana/Stevie Wonder/George Strait/U2/Sugarland/Martina McBride/Fun. John Irving/Nelson DeMille/Pat Conroy/Jane Smiley/Michael Connolly.
I’ll throw in a sixth. I’ll bend the rules here in BloggyVille.
I’m not going to nominate anybody specifically because I’ve done that too many times in the past couple of years and I’ve tagged plenty of folks for challenges in the past month.
Also, I consider so many folks who read my work here creative. You know who you are. If you feel juicy and want to join in with a five facts post to grab a badge and link up, consider yourself nominated to join in the fun!
I love your math! Hate your broccoli! And still am up for a house swap for a month (or even a week) next winter to get you out of the snow. 🙂

I like broccoli too!!
And I love snow. Even though I’ve never been around real snow. But from what I’ve observed, people never like the weather of the country they live in. It’s always too hot or too cold or too humid. 😛

I hope that someday you experience real snow, Shooby Doo. And that somebody who’s with you takes a photo of your face at that first moment. And you can put that image on your blog. 🙂

Fabulous! That’s two mentions I got in your blogs. I’ve been here since 1975 and on the 8th of July it’ll be 40 years for me in CNY; love it!
Good job with the challenge; I thank you for doing it. 🙂

Congratulations. Awesome to learn more about you. Great to hear a ‘guy’ likes broccoli. Brussel sprouts are yummy sliced thin, seasoned and done in bacon fat with the lid on, tossed and covered again and crisp, crumbled bacon to finish. This is done before the green turns bland.

You need to get yourself a pair of cross country skis. With all the golf courses you frequent, they’ve got to have some they use for skiing. It will give you a whole new lease on winter.

Thanks for that suggestion, Scott. Or should I say no thanks for that suggestion, Scott. I am far too slip-slidey for that. 😦

It was a well deserved honor and Congratulations, Mark!
I like your authors and musical taste. I think you are honest and a straight shooter. You mention the places you love to walk but you don’t have to say; we know you are a truly wonderful husband, loving father, best friens to count on and dog owner. All who are close to you want to stay close 🙂

I think I knew everything in those 5 points except that you like to read fiction Mark! There are always things to learn about a person, aren’t there? I am kinda moved by the fact that you break your own rules (award acceptance policy) for the sake of people you care about. You’re a soft touch (in all the good ways, and none of the bad) Mark. ❤
