Let us eat pie

Once upon a time, my dear wife Karen came to Cape Cod without me. She brought her collection of friends for their Girls Getaway to the Happy Cottage, leaving me and Ellie B aka Dogamous Pyle to fend for ourselves back in the Little Bitty, as per another of our summer rituals.

They ate freshly made pie from Marion’s Pie Shop just outside of Chatham, and she’s never forgotten. Good wife that she is, also noted that perfect for her husband winning the daily diabetes fight is the fact that given a 24-hour notice, the folks at Marion’s will bake you up a sugar-free pie.

And so we did, in person at the counter on the way to our day strolling the quaint village of Chatham.

Karen wanted her pie to eat that day upon our return to the Happy Cottage. She chose the small Strawberry Rhubarb.

Given a selection of seven sugar-free varieties that would be ready to pick up the next day, I bypassed the more common apple, blueberry, peach and a trio of more exotic berries and went with a peach-blueberry hybrid.

Yes, Marion’s does good work. And I thought the pies were reasonably priced at $7.25 for the small, easily sufficient to feed two.

  1. I love that door sign! My grandma used to bake pies EVERY DAY when I was growing up in her house, and wouldn’t you know, I really don’t like them! I think coconut cream, lemon meringue and key lime are the only ones I can even stomach, and those are maybe once a year if that. I think that’s so cool that she made you a sugar free special pie. 🙂

    • They have a list of seven sugar-free varities that they make for anybody who orders them, Rachel. Though it’s nicer to think that it was just for me. ❤ Too bad you don't really like pies. You can have cake. That' cool. 🙂

  4. Awesome foodie pics, Mark! When I was a kid I would have a birthday pie instead of a birthday cake. I’m a fan! One of my goals in the fall is to make a pie that fits my latest food requirements and preferences. Always up to a food challenge {thumbs up}

  7. I would be straight in to that shop and buying blackberry pie. How do they get any work done with those two seats on the porch? I would be so tempted to just sit and watch the world go by.

  9. I bake a lot of pies and galettes every fall, (we have an apple tree and some berry bushes) and here and there throughout the year. I buy pecan pie or frozen key lime on occasion, but at the market, not from a pie shop.
    My parents are friends with a couple who own a pie shop, though I’ve never been. Perhaps we should do that on vacation this year. $7 is a very reasonable price for those delicious looking pies!

  10. Mark, there is nothing to compare to a great pecan pie, baked with a touch of brandy, served warm, with a dollop of real whipped cream. I have missed it somethin’ awful since the curse of gluten-freedom. But my friend Barbara came up with this recipe, which can be easily adapted to gluten free–Yay! And my pal MoSY not only baked it, but wrote a great post about it.

  11. This is the second blog post I’ve read recently on pie shops. I always start thinking “Sweeney Todd.” 🙂
    My daughters would have been fine in that pie shop.
    My older daughter and her wife had pies instead of cake at their wedding last summer.

  15. There are a couple of pie shops here in CA and one actually has bands playing. I was looking at it the other day but haven’t been in yet. That one looks adorable. Hope you enjoyed. Make mine chocolate!

  21. Pie Heaven ! And a shop with a sense of humor..love the Sweeney Todd thing, and that they will make you the sugar-free version.

    I seek them out everywhere. Pie restaurants were abundant in Salt Lake, and a place to go socially (LDS influence made for limited bars/clubs, etc). Marie Callender’s was one of the best at the time.There was a small,quaint one in Baltimore that I used a lot called “Dangerously Delicious”. ☺

  22. I have not visited a pie shop but my favorite is by Village Pie Makers (Amish I think) cranberry Apple walnut. When I get one of those I eat it for every meal.

  23. Ohhhh, I love pie – blueberry for me please. 🙂 must say that I’ve never been in a Pie Shop. I wonder if that is because I was a bad kid and would have been made into a pie should i have entered? Ha! Great photo Mark and I love small privately owned shops.

  24. Wow that peach blueberry looks amazing. There is truly nothing like homemade pie. When I was in high school there was a place, really like a restaurant called 4 and 20 that sold nothing but pie. The varieties were amazing. I think I went every Saturday night with a bunch of friends my entire senior year!

  27. Pie is quite possibly the greatest dessert ever. I love cherry. And dutch apple. and of course, pumpkin. And whenever I visit The Spot, I have to get a piece of Sugar Cream. And My grandmother makes an exceptional chocolate and butterscotch pie, but ONLY on Thanksgiving. And now, it’s 7:24a.m., I’m sort of wishing I had a piece of peach, to enjoy for breakfast. (My next blog shall be titled “Why am I getting so Fat?” lol!) I gotta say, I love this pie place. And that sign…now that’s funny right there! I would definitely leave my kids in the car. They would make an awful tasting pie. 😉

      Yeah, this place IS pie heaven. The aroma … It was so good, I don't think they snagged a rambunctious kid in a while. 🙂
