‘Sex Tape’ soils the top of my worst 2014 movie pile

My bottom 10 from the 52 first-run films that I saw for my weekly Monday Film Review Blogs on the Syracuse New Times site is over yonder, the first entry for my 2015 Thursday Film News Blogs. Talk about making news …

You can read my Bottom 10 for 2014 on the infinitely interesting Syracuse New Times site by clicking the link below.

Unike last week, I will not tease you by give you only No. 10 on the list here.

No. The very worst film I saw last year, by far, was “Sex Tape.”

You can click over to find out why. Let’s just say: How could you, Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal?

You can also find Nos. 2 through 10. And don’t be surprised if you discover a movie that you liked — my goodness, maybe even adored — over there on my list of stinkeroos.

Because there’s no accounting for taste when it comes to the big screen.

What movie did you work up a big dislike for in 2014, and why? What sort of movie is likely to rub you the wrong way from the start? What’s the movie that makes you make you gnash your teeth the most when people start talking about great movies?

  1. The top of my worst movies this year would be the fraternity that moved in next to the young couple with a baby. I cannot remember its name, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne were in it, along with Seth Rogen, I think. It was extremely offensive. I will not watch the movie you mentioned, “Sex Tape” nor will I probably watch the Melissa McCarthy one, which you said wasn’t too bad… I liked Identity Thief and I also liked St. Vincent. I have enjoyed, “The Imitation Game,” due to its historical references with Turing’s invention of the machine that could decode the “Enigma.” I also will treasure the Stephen Hawking movie, “the Theory of Everything.” It will motivate me, since he lived past the two years they gave him with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease and is now 72 years old. I will be seeing “Unbroken” this weekend, plan to and expect to enjoy but cry throughout it.

  2. Well, once again, I never saw any of the ones on your list, my friend. I think the worst I saw this year was “Endless Love.” Actually, I didn’t see it. I saw the first 30 minutes of it before I gagged and left. (It was the second feature at the drive-in, and I was there to see the first.) Ouch!

  3. That one did look icky, sort of like an excuse to show off her nice figure. I guess sex tapes are for young people. We did watch “What To Expect…” last night on TV, and Miss Diaz was pretty good in that one.

  4. There is no part of this that I didn’t love–starting with what’s possibly the greatest blog post title ever. You deserve a medal for your public service of warning us off the worst movies of the year. “If you still go to see Sex Tape after reading this, you have only yourself to answer to.” [snort, snicker…]

  5. Oh, yeah, that Sex Tape movie, I could smell it a mile away. Thankfully I did not see it. I did have the pleasure of seeing it, thankfully just a rental. You know me, whatever the kids want. I’m currently trying to warn them away from The Penguins… and Transformers ones.

  6. Looking for some movies to watch yesterday I nearly picked up Sex Tape but it didn’t really appeal. I chose Jersey Boys instead having loved the stage show. It was ok but the cast didn’t hold a candle to the West End originals. My other choice was The Railway Man with Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman (I haven’t watched that one yet)

  7. I’m primarily a horror movie fan so I was really excited to see “Annabelle” because I thought it might be about the REAL Annabelle doll that is kept in the Warren’s house right here in Connecticut… but no. It was a total disappointment and I was very sad.

  8. I did not see even one of the movies on your Bottom 10 list, although I did see Jersey Boys on Broadway when it first came out a few years back because, when growing up, I was a huge fan of the Four Seasons. The Broadway show was good, I thought. Not great, but very enjoyable. And yet I had no desire to see the movie. I don’t know that I have a bottom 10 of my own because I don’t go to the movies that often, anymore. And when I do, I am very picky about what I see. Maybe I’ll resolve to go to the movies more often in 2015.

    • I thought “Jersey Boys” could have been so much more, Doobster, given the music and the life. Ah, well, can’t win them all. I hope you do venture to see a few more this year, sir. Last week I covered my Top 10. They are doing great work, too, these days.

  9. luckily, i only saw one of your hall of shame list, jump street. kind of dumb, kind of funny, and yes, lots of homophobia in there. my worst one of the year, was ‘hey, white people,’ or something similar stupidly named, and so bad that i can’t even remember the real name. i know it had some great reviews, but it seemed disjointed and a bit racist to me. here’s to a wonderful year of movies ahead!

    • I have a short fuse for the intentional gender and race humor. It must be done exactly right to not be insulting to all, I think, Beth. Karen and I just watched “Anchorman 2” on NetFllix on the last day of my break yesterday … that one straddled the line for sure. Here’s to a great 2015 movie-wise, yes, my friend.

  11. And yet someone ponied up the millions of dollars for the movie’s budget. It is a very confusing world, especially if you’re a screenwriter looking for a budget…

  12. Mark, I don’t even like the name of that one. Apparently it gives away the entire plot, so watching the movie would be unnecessary. I hope you have better movies to choose from in 2015.
