Godzilla apparently lost the fight for screen time

When you remake a classic like “Godzilla,” you’re going to give the scaly beast plenty of star power, right?

That’s what I thought, even though the monster mash didn’t make my review list this summer.

Then I caught the Cinema Blend story by Mike Bracken writing of the Honest Trailers clip that picks on the remake because, of all things, the big old monster gets 11 minutes on the screen.

Does that make sense to you?

Me neither.

Also in my weekly Film News blog over on the Syracuse New Times site is the revelation from Screen Rant that “Ghostbusters 3” is very likely to feature an all-woman collection of ghost catchers.

Yay to that, especially on the heels of last week’s sad story about Marvel Studio’s heel-dragging on the female superhero title character front.

If you’d like to see it all on the quite awesome syracusenewtimes.com, click the link below. That will include the links to the original movie news sites where I do my hunting, too.

How many minutes out of, say, 123, would you expect the big-name monster star to get in its own movie? Would you go out of your way to see a third Ghostbusters in the franchise? Does it get more enticing for you with an all-woman crew of ghost-chasers? Would you care to share your favorite monster or ghost story ever?/

    • Serpent tongues show up in some of my nightmares, too, Apple Pie! And actually, I thought the Godfather franchise had enough juice to sustain part three, even though each was further down the hill than its predecessor, of course. Thanks for your contribution, my friend.

  1. Out of 123 minutes, I would expect the monster to be in at least 49 minutes. The whole middle. That gives plenty of time in the beginning to work up to the problematic monster and plenty of time at the end to kill it and live happily ever after.

No Ghostbusters 3 for me. I only like ghost stories that are realistic. When I was growing up, I actually wanted to be a parapsychologist, and it wasn’t until I was older that I realized it didn’t seem to be a very stable job. (Though I still think it would be fun.) 🙂

  2. if the movie is ‘godzilla’, i’m going to say he should occupy the majority of the screen time in his own flick. i’m a fan of the original one, complete with the zippered costume and bad special effects. all part of the fun, in my opinion. did you know you created a pun, ‘on he heels of….’ with regard to the marvel controversy about not using females? yes, i would watch and all female ghostbusters movie, i think it would be a lot of fun and bring new elements to a comedy classic.

    • I like my pun, and thanks for pointing it out, Beth! I hope we get that all-woman Ghostbusters 3 because it would be so great! And Godzilla the old school was cheesy and wonderful, you are correct. ))

  3. Godzilla and his Monster relations don’t do anything for me anymore, but like you I was into the scary stuff as a youngin’. (Still, I watched Hotel Transylvania with my kids the other day and it cracked me up–fun stuff.) Enjoy ’80s flicks very much. All the John Hughes, Ghostbusters and Footloose of course, Back to the Future, Stripes, Weekend at Bernie’s, even the dumb ones like Police Academy and Hunk. So when they make them again, the films could possibly appeal to the younger set on a new level, but they don’t float my boat. It’s like you enjoying how Karen (or possibly even your mom) makes a pie crust and no one elses pie crust will ever compare.

    • Every single 80s film on your list earns a whoop from me, Liz. I mean, ‘Footloose,’ how can you not want to move to ‘everybody cut, everybody cut!’ Regarding ‘Police Academy,’ Bobcat Goldthwaite is from East Syracuse, and from being the music and entertainment writer for 21 years, I’ve come to know him when he’s returned to visit family here. One time I was sent to review his stand-up show at the local casino showroom, and he spotted me in the crowd and said oh, the Herald-Journal is here and went off on a 10-minute impromptu shtick of local jokes that brought the room to its feet. Ten years after that he was talking at the podium of the neighborhood movie theater for the premiere of a movie he directed and I said something to my dear wife Karen about the last time I saw him and the person on the other side said, loudly, you do not know Bobcat Goldthwaite personally. His sister was in the row in front of us. She turns around and shouts down this guy, Bob loves Mark! So one vote for Police Academy, right?

  4. I’m not a big horror flick fan Mark, so I’m not likely going to see Godzilla, remake #876543. I did like the Ghost buster movies and would likely go to see an all-female version. I get a kick out of the shennanigans.

    • Bill Murray suggested a really terrific all-woman cast for GB3, if you click over to SNT site, Paul. The antics could be incredible! Horror flicks, believe it or not, I liked way more when I was a kid. Talking pre-teen, even. Talk to you later!
