Kevin Costner matures into the GM role in ‘Draft Day’

Kevin Costner long ago passed that movie star moment when some fans start to despise his work because … because … because … well, because he’s so damn successful, might appear a bit smug at most times, has the swagger to bring his rock band out on tour even though he might not be the best singer in the world … and because it makes them feel better to make fun of him.

That’s not me.

I like Costner’s body of work.

Hell, I kind of dug the rugged Americana sound when he brought that band, Modern West, to Syracuse.

So it did not surprise me how much I liked “Draft Day.”

Costner wore the player’s role well in “Field of Dreams,” “Tin Cup” and “Bull Durham.”

Now he’s at the age to lead other men.

In this movie, as Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver Jr., Costner shows the moxie and cool head to stand up under immense pressure.

Even the Dog Pound should be impressed.

Don’t let any big-star bias keep you from this one.

  1. i enjoy sports movies and happy it was not a bust, as you alluded to, big stars in their later years, do not always maintain a level of quality in their work and the films they choose. happy to hear good things about this one. (still love bull durham as my favorite)

  2. We actually watched him with Judd Nelson in “Fandango” a few months ago. Very odd. I couldn’t make myself enjoy “Tin Cup,” but other than that, Costner seems like an affable, all-American guy.

  3. We will likely see this movie. We’re football fans. But speaking of Mr. Costner’s body of work, my faves have nothing to do with sports, unfortunately. I enjoyed Mr. Brooks, 13 days, No Way Out, JFK, A Perfect World, and of course, The Untouchables. Somehow, I like Mr. Costner in roles where he’s not necessarily THE hero or the iconic figure. I like him when he plays flawed characters or the everyday man.
