On Madagascar, they battle to extend lemurs’ 60-million year history

I am convinced in a big way.

Save the lemurs.

I didn’t know much about the furry primates before viewing the new IMAX documentary “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar.”

But after 38 minutes of observing how the 60-million year history of this animal is in danger because its forest land habitat is shrinking on the fourth-largest island in the world, I’m convinced that Dr. Patricia Wright is an angel for her work with the native people and the lemurs, striving to find the perfect balance.

The camera work delights, and the resonant voice of Morgan Freeman as the narrator sets the perfect tone.

Did you know there are more than 100 species of the lemur of many sizes, from sub-mouse mini on up? Until 100 years ago, there were lemurs the size of gorillas. Would you like to see a nature documentary on a domed IMAX screen?

  1. Wow, I had no idea! I’m all about saving species that have been affected by the change in habitat (which sadly may be all wildlife if things continue the way they are going.) My husband was behind a campaign in our town to save the salamanders from being squished by cars during mating season. He and and group had a salamander tunnel built which naturally leads the salamanders through this tunnel so they don’t get crushed by cars. Who knew? 🙂

    • That is a wonderful idea, Mrs., a salamander-saving tunnel. Many compliments to Mr.

The scientists are trying to teach the Madagascan villagers how important it is to keep some forest unburned for a habitat for the lemurs, but of course, they’re more concerned with making their land fit for growing food. An uneasy peace seems to being struck.

  2. I have enjoyed reading about this animal, knew them only barely from one nature show and the silly antics depicted in the cartoon animated films. Lemurs, as all animals, are special and we need to be aware of ways to help and keep the environment safe for them. I think you are right, Mark, Dr. Wright is an angel! Thanks for this interesting summary!

  3. i would love to see this and i had no idea about any of this. all i’ve ever thought about them in the past, was how cute they were. it’s always good to become more aware of the world around us i think, especially when we are causing harm.
