A Super Bowl feast: chili at home, turnovers on TV

So how was the Super Bowl celebrated in our Syracuse city neighborhood home? Food was heavily involved, of course. Yup. Flat screen, football and food.

Take shrimp from right bowl. Hold by tail. Dip in tangy cocktail sauce in left bowl. Bite to fingers holding said tail.

The Sunday spectacular started with an appetizer of my choice: a bowl of shrimp sitting next to another bowl of cocktail sauce, perfect for super dipping.

I stood next to the table and grazed liberally before bringing the combo over to my dear wife Karen on the couch.

Chili and cornbread, a food union for the ages.

Timed for shortly after kickoff — so also after the oh-so-early safety on that bad Broncos snap put the Seahawks up 2-0 and blew up the hopes of 3 and 7 board square-holders everywhere — came the main event. A crockpot of super spicy chili was accompanied by a baking dish of cornbread. I splashed a tad more hot sauce and a palmful of shredded sharp cheddar into the chili and spread a bit of butter to melt into the warm cornbread.

Bite, chew, watch the Seahawks score. Bite, chew, watch the Seahawks score again. So filling, so satisfying.

My tummy did rumble just a bit when the Red Hot Chili Peppers and their hard rock joined pop wonder Bruno Mars during the much-ballyhooed halftime show. Mars on the drums and dancing won me over, but “the biggest concert of the year,” as Fox announcers kept saying? I think not.

Beer, here. Karen goes for the Labatt's Blue Light in a bottle. Mark 's choice is the Bud Light Lime in a can.

Of course, chili is best washed down with a beer. Or two. OK, Karen stayed at two, but I made it to three. We were at home, and it was a great American holiday, after all.

We were so full no dessert was needed. Besides, the Broncos provided all the turnovers anybody needed for the evening. Seahawks 43, Broncos 8? The meal won.

All food seen above was prepared by Karen. I thank her for making Super Bowl Sunday spectacular, regardless of the lopsided game on the field.

What did you manage to scarf during Super Bowl XLVIII? What do you consider your best and worst Super Bowl chow-downs ever?

  1. my highlight food was a plate of hot as hell wings with blue cheese dressing on the side. drank a labatts light and a glass of red to go with them. highlight of the game too, though i did enjoy halftime. looks like karen spoiled you with a wonderful feast, at least you had that ) worst i’ve ever had was a box of 99 cent buffalo wing egg roll things, and a carry out pizza with hot peppers that tasted like soap. i’m just a sucker for all things that sound spicy.

  2. We had wings, buffalo chicken dip, chips and dips, and watched the Puppy Bowl before the big game. No drinking here though, Mark.

    • I was rooting for the Seahawks. If I were pulling for the Broncos, it may have been a six-beer game like the old days. If it had been my Jets losing like that (Jets in the Super Bowl again, there’s a dream) it may have been a 10-beer game like the really old days, DJ. And you?

  3. I just had popcorn.

I made fun of the Bud Light Lime recently, but you are the second poster in a week to mention it. Maybe I need to actually try this now? LOL
