The neighbors across the street appear to be having a little work done on their house. Yesterday morning, that resulted in one humungous hole. In fact, it looked like the whole front wall was gone. Nice living room furniture you’ve got there. Smart to drape drop cloths over the couch like that.
What a window that could be. How are you going to find drapes?
While walking with Ellie B, we spotted two construction guys standing astride the huge gap. Saying that they were getting ready to put in a new picture window is somewhat of an understatement. I would call it a wall of a window opening. I was wondering how the second story was still standing, this space for the outside to look in was so large.
“Big hole,” I offered. One guy laughed and gave me a wave.
I heard much banging and clattering thereafter.
It sounded like they were determined to cover that hole, and quick.
After all, it is December in Syracuse, N.Y. It wasn’t freezing, but it didn’t reach 40 degrees, either.
The name of the company putting in that big window is Comfort. That’s a hard name to live up to while putting in replacement windows at this time of year around here.
But 5 1/2 hours later, they had a bay window installed. It was much smaller than I had expected, but they had also put up plywood replacement wall and insulation wrap snug around it.
They were packing up the truck. That same guy saw me snapping my after picture. He laughed again, and gave me a final wave.
Job well done, I told him.

Yeah, I thought a much bigger window was coming….kind of disappointed. Oh well, at least they will be closed in and warm!

But I’m glad they sent about it the way the did, Kim. It’s not every day you get to see a hole in a house quite that large.

Haha wow– not the best time of year for such a project! And okay, the end result is not so bad… I was picturing some huge aquarium sized window in the side of their home… That’s more charming.

Indeed, a window the size of that whole hole would invite life in a fishbowl, Aussa. I am much in favor of the more charming bay window, too.

yep, i’d wait until it was at least 70 out to go for any open wall upgrades on my house. amazing, it makes me so cold just looking at it. maybe they got a really good deal? and on the plus side, better your dog came home with the ‘flee gene’, rather than a ‘flea gene’ i suppose.

Yeah, you can’t defrost dinner by putting it on the counter if you’re getting that kind of window work done, Beth. And yeah, the doggie gene is better with the second ‘e’ rather than the ending ‘a.’

Fritz Gentile from Comfort is sending you the free publicity $$. Lets use it to play some simulator golf!

Somehow I do not think I will make Mr. Gentile’s check list. I played real golf with Chris Wagner two days after Election Day, as you read. Did you get out one last time? I could be up for simulator golf at Northern PInes if indeed that is more financially responsible than the joint up at Destiny USA.

Yes…Northern Pines someday. No desire to patronize that expensive mall rat place. Cheaper to fly out and play Pebble Beach for real!!

We will do NP simulator this winter, DJ.

Holy hole! I never, in a million years would have assumed they’d have to cut a hole so big for such a regular sized window.

The window they took out was bigger than the new window, but not quite as huge as that holy hole, CBXB. Maybe they encountered some rotted wood they wanted to excavate in the process, too …

Except for the missing siding, it looks pretty good. I have one of those giant picture windows, too and I’m still debating whether to make it smaller. But it’s going to be in the 20’s here today, and bound to get colder, so it might end up being a spring time project. And the dogs will have to stay next door, given the supreme temptation of a large hole leading to the great outdoors.

I cannot imagine a project like this with the dogs remaining in the house. Our Ellie B came from the humane society with the ‘flee gene.’ She’d be out that hole in one second flat. Yeah, the cold factor would deter me, too. Thanks, SDS.
