A Super Bowl primer for people of many lands.
I wrote this one to help out non-football-regulars follow the big game last year, before it was New England vs. Seattle with the shadow of Deflategate and before it was Katy Perry set to dance at halftime and before this new set of commercials carefully crafted to win your hearts and dollars.
Enjoy.
I am entered in two super bowl football pools. I’m not thrilled with this year’s participants so it is more the pool results I’m interested in. Go Seahawks. Sorta. Who cares? 😀

I am a Jets fan, so no-go Patriots. I like Russell Wilson’s play, so go Seahawks.

hi mark, i will be re reading! Can’t really believe a whole year has gone by since we attempted to stay awake till 3am. I hope the show at half time (is it called that?!) is a bit more spectacular than last year – we need really spectacular to keep those eyelids from drooping.
Here it’s the Six Nations rugby tournament that will have us glued to the TV for the next few weeks starting friday.
We move in two weeks – just heard thismorning that there is a new tenant – packing boxes here we come 🙂

Get packing because this is so very exciting, way more than the Super Bowl and Six Nations rugby put together, Rachel. A new house and great garden and allotment and paths to walk and neighborhood to appreciate. That’s a chapter you all deserve. 🙂
Now Katy Perry at the halftime show, I hope that will keep the lids from drooping, my super diligent American football watcher over there.

Mark, that was EXACTLY what I needed! Yes, indeed, my attorney, just today in fact, invited me to his Superbowl party. My sister offered to give me a tutorial, but I turned her down because she makes me feel stupid because I don’t know sports. In a book I was writing, I had to learn a tiny bit about football, and I was surprised – no, SHOCKED – to learn that there are actually two different teams on each team for the offense and defense! THAT is the extent of my knowledge. I know the point is to get the ball through that H-shaped bar and a different point system is allotted for how it gets there. And I know there are long, expensive commercials that seem to gratify people. And I know I have to go with the Patriots because Bill Bilichick is Jon Bon Jovi’s best friend. And I know there’s some controversy with him over underinflated footballs. Ah, heck, I’ll just do what other people do and fake it. 😉

Now at least you know a little bit, Rachel, but remember I wrote that last year. No Peyton Manning and Denver. Bon Jovi’s best friend Belichick’s Patriots play the Seattle Seahawks, like you said. OK, you got it. 🙂 Have fun faking it.

I was still sick… The antibiotics kicked me a lot harder than I imagined, so I didn’t go. I missed the fun, but at least I didn’t spread the germs. 🙂

Well, better safe and slightly sick than being the cause of the next plague, my dear friend Rachel. Dagnabbit.

Yes, and I’m sure the people who didn’t get exposed to my germs were thankful. 🙂

I am so disappointed in the Super Bowl that i can barely get out of bed in the morning. I can’t stand either team. It’s going to end up being just like the Presidential election–which team to I hate the least. Hell, I might not even tune in! I’ll show ’em.

What a one-man protest that would be, Mark. Actually, it could be fun for you to take a museum run and enjoy the lack of bodies. Or do a lot of people get that idea, I wonder?
Me, I’ll wish my Jets would come back for the first time since I was 11 (good God) and eat wings and drink beverages and watch the spectacle and root for the Seahawk to thrash the Patriots nevertheless.

Great Primer! I enjoy my football! Went to many Friday Nights to watch several high school teams. Attended many Ohio State Buckeye Parties on Saturdays! Sat in the Horseshoe several times! The game is enjoyed by me… so I will watch the Super Bowl and eat all the deliciousness during commercials. I will say I love college ball more…..(the egos are not quite developed yet for most of the kids)
…but I will say…I have a few favorite teams in the NFL that I enjoy watching on Sundays. So with that said… Are You Ready For Some Football?? 😀

Very cool, Nancy. I’m with you all the way. I followed my high school team when I was in high school, and still follow my college team, the Maryland Terrapins, and my dear wife Karen and I have season tickets to follow our hometown team, the Syracuse Orange, and I root for my New York Jets come Sundays (and the odd Thursday and Monday nights). So yes, I am Ready For Some Football!

I recall reading last year. That is too much football information for me to process. I haven’t watched one game this season, but we’ll be on the couch, starches and sugars in hand, watching on Sunday. Because ‘Murica.
