In Wes Anderson’s world of “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” there are more odd ducks flapping about than in the pond next to the nuclear power plant.
You know the old saying about funny peculiar or funny ha-ha?
In this strange and wonderful offering, Ralph Fiennes and Tony Revolori answer yes and yes.
Fiennes’ expansive turn as concierge Gustave H is deadpan and slapstick. Revolori’s debut as loyal Lobby Boy is sublime down to his wide-eyed wonder.
And the packed theater rippled with laughter frequently.

Mark, your review is intriguing. The Grand Budapest Hotel sounds like fun. That’s more than I can say for “Mr. Sherman and Peabody.” You just can’t turn a 5 minute cartoon into a full length movie. You just can’t. 😉

I like interesting movies. I really liked the one with Judi Dench and others from Britain. It was called the The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. I will check out this movie, especially like Ralph Fiennes. The way it sounds both funny and quirky will be a great one to see! Thanks for this post, Mark! I liked your review, well written and informative, too. Smiles, Robin

Mark, that sounds like my kind of movie. I love the odd duck type, so can’t wait for it to get to DVD. Love the kind that cause a good belly laugh. And that sounds like one I’ll buy rather than rent. There are some I like to watch more than one time. Thanks for the heads up on this one.

as you would probably imagine, mark, i loved every second of it. the attention to detail, the camera angles, the humor, and of course, the simple ‘special effects’ , and amazing cast of eccentric characters, all lived up to my expectations. wonderful. and you are right, lots and lots of odd ducks – the audience clapped at the end at my viewing too )

Great review, Mark. My bf, my son and I made sure to see this last weekend. We all love Wes Anderson. My review: it reminded me of those beautiful, sweet, colorful, delightful, intricately-spun macarons we kept seeing throughout the film.

Trailers that tell the whole story are not good, K. I agree totally. I would like to hear what you think.

You know what…?
Some people get to just walk around and go watch movies, then get to tell the rest of us to go see it without giving anything away.
That has got to be hard….
This movie…?
I will park my big truck in a mall parking lot and go see it, then pay the parking ticket.
It’ll be cheaper than the popcorn and drink…

You are so correct that it is not easy to write these reviews and keep the cat in the sack, so to speak, Trey. Thank you for noticing that.
And, what, no big rig spaces in America’s malls? That stinks.
Enjoy TGBH, my friend.
