A good neighbor at your side can make life easier

The next time I’m in a bit of a homeowner’s pickle, it will not surprise me one bit when my next door neighbor is ready to lend a word of advice or even more.

In the decade that my dear wife Karen and I have lived in this Syracuse city neighborhood of Syracuse, Tim Garriques has been a constant in his availability.

Even though we don’t hang out, it’s reassuring to know that friendly faces will always be available in this day and age.

This is the first of my new weekly posts about Syracuse and the Central New York community for the site for our local National Public Media radio station.

Of course, I always strive for that universal chord that will let you relate to the topic anywhere in the world.

  1. Good Neighbor Tim sounds like a great guy. I wonder if he’s any relation to our former neighbors in Liverpool, George and Nancy Walters. In the non-winter months, it wasn’t unusual to see George on his riding mower in our back yard … mowing our grass as well as his. In exchange, George and his son, Craig, often played catch (baseball) in their yard and ours. It was a very happy arrangement.

We were equally blessed by great neighbors here in Melbourne, Florida. Last summer, the day before we were going on vacatio, our roof sprung a leak and water poured into our living room. Two of our neighbors threw tarp over the damaged area and supervised the repair work while we were gone.

  2. Argh, for some reason the whole story won’t load on my computer. It has the top part of the screen but nothing to scroll too. Grrr, curses! I ought to read about neighbors and learn to appreciate them because I tend to hide from mine.
