I must watch the golf in Kapalua

Every sports fan in the U S of A was watching the NFL playoffs late Saturday night, right?

The Saints just scored another second-half touchdown to go up on the Eagles 20-7.

But there was still 3:06 left in the third quarter. Considering what we saw the Colts do overcome a 28-point deficit to break the hearts of the Chiefs with a 45-44 victory earlier today, it’s not over. What’s that, the Eagles just scored to make it 20-14 with 32 seconds left in the third. Field goals traded. Eagles score a TD with 4:54 left in the game to take the lead at 24-23 and put the Philadelphia crowd in a tizzy. And the Saints send them all home dazed with a last-second field goal for a 26-24 win.

Exciting stuff, this wild card round of the playoffs.

Yet I also was watching golf on my iPad.

Why, you ask?

Because I love golf.

Because I love PGA Tour golf in January, when I’m living with snow in Syracuse, N.Y.

Because I really love golf in Hawaii in January, with the time difference and the extra thrill that make Kapalua and the Tournament of Champions what it is.

Because on the Golf Channel on my iPad, it looked like this:

The Golf Channel broadcasts the PGA Tour's Hyundai Tournament of Champions from Kapalua, Hawaii, on Saturday night.

The Golf Channel broadcasts the PGA Tour’s Hyundai Tournament of Champions from Kapalua, Hawaii, on Saturday night.

Zach Johnson leads by three shots after the second round, if you’re interested.

He doesn’t have to beat either Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson to come awsay with the title of the tournament after Monday’s final round.

As the name implies, this first event of the calendar year brings together tournament winners from last season. Those two biggest attractions in golf did win and qualify, but decided it’s too close to the holidays to pick up their clubs and leave home. Besides, home is Florida for Tiger and Southern California for Phil. No snow there. And, they can surely afford a vacation to Hawaii any time they’d like.

Is the natural beauty enough to make you turn your screen attention to golf for even a little while?

  2. It looks beautiful! Our daughter did three weeks of golf lessons at school (loads better than hurdles) and by the final week enjoyed it. Week one she said golf ‘was for old men!’

    • In some way, golf is indeed for old men, Rachel. Anbd yet I started playing when I was 12. And it’s such a social game, young people of both genders should learn it because of that long-lasting benefit!

      • funny how kids get these ideas in their heads. On TV here we never see women’s golf so not surprisingly she had formed her opinion. I was pleased she enjoyed it in the end.Golf here can be quite elitist with high membership fees. Is it like that in the States?

      • There are private membership courses and also quite a lot of public daily-fee courses. In the Syracuse area, we are fortunate to have more than 20 nice public courses. You can play 18 holes and get a cart for as low as 20 dollars American. Some, of course, are more expensive than that. And there are two city-owned nine-hole courses where the fee is less than 10 American. Not so elitist, Rachel.

      • makes a nice change! In England there are some public courses but many are members only. Scotland, on the other hand, is a great place for anyone and everyone to play golf.

  3. Mark … today I recommend alternating between that tourney and the NFL playoff game in Green Bay, where I think it’s going to be 22-below or something like that.

    • I just got back from an afternoon of movie and errands, and I am ready to switch back and forth from the frozen tundra of Green Bay to the tropical lushness of Hawaii, just like you say, Jim!
