This time, I hope the TV love lasts.
Chris Siegfried took to knee and proposed to Desiree Hartsock to close the latest season of “The Bachelorette” last night. Between wiping tears, she accepted.
What a lovely couple.
I think the girl found the right guy this time around. It almost didn’t happen. When host/always-available-ear Chris Harrison intoned “in the most dramatic finale ever” this time around, he spoke the truth.
Until this week’s episode, the mostly delightful Hartsock was in tears, thanks to last week’s sudden departure of Brooks Forester. He was the tall, somewhat flaky suitor who had won Hartsock’s heart early on. Of course, ABC’s love-search franchise throws 25 eligibles into the mansion to start each season, so the bachelorette or bachelor must do much multiple dating before coming down to one last big decision over the course of several months of taping.
To call Forester the frontrunner was an understatement. Oh, Hartsock did her share of smiling and smooching with the other guys, but whenever Brooks entered the room, she lit up. Trouble was, as hard as he tried, he didn’t feel the same way.
So, down to three guys, he told her so. Amid many tears. And it was the class thing to do, admitting that he wasn’t going to be the one she’d spend the rest of her life with.
That left Chris and Drew Kennedy as the final two. The finale was set. Would Hartsock call the whole thing off and leave single and heartbroken? Would she pick Chris or Drew? Would Brooks change his mind and return for her heart and hand?
Quickly, Des told Drew he wasn’t the one, turning what was supposed to be his last-chance-to-cement-the-deal date into a quick goodbye. Basically, she did to him what Brooks had done to her. Again, right move.
And Chris smiling, writing poetry, treating her with tenderness and respect.
She decided, this guy is pretty great.
She told him, “You are the greatest man I’ve ever met.”
She said yes.
Brooks who?
In the “After the Rose” hour that traditionally closes the franchise and catches up with the final pair, they sat close on the couch, smiling. Des said she’s the one who’s moving, from California to Seattle. They’ve picked out their own place to start a new life together. His family loves her moving close.
They repeated their forever hopes and dreams.
I’m rooting for the kids to make it in the fishbowl existence that will be their first couple of years. I’m hoping they can settle into being the regular folk they appear to be, let the cameras go and the celebrity fade. Let them be happy in real life.
