A teen and a senior show that cream rises earlier, lasts longer

They say that viewed under the right prism, sports teaches us about life.

I believe them.

Take the results of two golf tournaments yesterday.

On the PGA Tour, 19-year-old Jordan Spieth won the John Deere Classic, capturing a long and winding, five-hole playoff against wise veteran Zach Johnson — a major winner with a Master’s green jacket in his closet — and Canadian David Hearn.

Spieth is the youngest to win on the PGA tour in 82 years.

Yes, our human race continues to get better and better handling the physical and mental demands of professional sports at a younger and younger age.

In the U.S. Senior Open, meanwhile, Kenny Perry won by five shots over Fred Funk. At 52 years old, Perry looked every bit as good as those flat-bellies playing in the John Deere. Over and over, analyst Johnny Miller and his announcing mates told the world how Perry still has what it takes to succeed competing with the younger pros. The week prior, in fact, Perry made the cut to play on the weekend at the Greenbrier Classic on the PGA Tour.

Yes, our human race continues to hold onto its physical and mental talents longer and longer.

Lesson learned again as this 55-year-old lives, writes, and looks for the next chapter of my full-time career.

Don’t judge somebody’s talent and drive merely by the amount of pages flipped over on the calendar.

  1. Very true, Mark! I don’t know beans about golf, but this made me think of 20-year-old baseball phenoms Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, and Fauja Singh, the 101-year old “Turbaned Tornado” who ran his last marathon at age 100. Inspirations all. As Satchel Paige allegedly said (or was it Yogi Berra?), “Age is just mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.”

    • There are examples everywhere, for sure. My friend Mike Carr reminded me that just yesterday, Morgan Shepherd drove in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in New Hampshire at the age of 71! He made it 91 laps out of the 301. Car failure, not an accident, too!
