Up in the Jamesville Beach Park sky, 22 balloons; on the stage, classic rock

Expect an invasion of music lovers from the Lilac City on Friday, June 28.

Rochester rocker Lou Gramm is headlining the first of three nights of the 34th annual Syracuse Ballonfest in Jamesville Beach Park.

Organizers announced details of the June 28 to 39 event this morning on a grassy field at the park. Honored guests included big guy Dingbat and handlers. They filled him with enough hot air to stand up but not enough to lift the basket into the sky.

Onondaga County parks commissioner Bill Lansley said 22 hot air balloons are expected to participate in the fest, available to hire out for rides at selected times during the event, and provide a gorgeous sky sight in the pretty park at other times. One balloon expected is called Peanut. That’s a giant elephant that will fly on the east coast for the first time.

Classic rock will soar from the three headliners.

Gramm, the lead singer from Rochester who guided Foreigner to 16 Billboard Hot Chart top 40 hits from 1977 to 1988, will perform for the first time in Central New York since the Oswego Harborfest in 2006. Mary Jo Spillane of National Audio said at this morning’s gathering that Gramm, 62, continues to improve from the 1997 surgery to remove an egg-sized tumor from his brain.

On June 13, Gramm will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame with former Foreigner band mate Mick Jones.

Two days ago, Gramm’s biography “Juke Box Hero: My Five Decades in Rock ‘n’ Roll” was released.

His playlist includes the hits he wrote and sang with Foreigner, as well as his top 20 solo hits, “Midnight Blue” from 1987 and “Just Between You and Me” from 1989.

The other two headliners have played more frequently in Central New York. Starship featuring Mickey Thomas plays at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29. Eddie Money performs at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 30.

Central New York bands round out the three days of music.

Music starts at 6 p.m. on June 28 with rock band 3 Inch Fury, followed by classic rock band Hard Promises and then Gramm at 9:45 p.m.

Invictus rocks at 4 p.m. on June 29, followed by the southern rock of Yankee Rebel, fronted by Conan Fioramonte, and the decades-ranging classic rock of Under the Gun, with front man Lee Anderson, leading to Starship’s set.

Wild Honey, fronted by Syracuse Area Music Awards winner Kim Monroe, plays at 4 p.m. June 30, followed by Rock Bottom All-Stars, the latest band from former Under the Gun guitarist JT, and then Money.

Tickets are $10 per day, available at the gate. Parking will be free.

The Ballonfest starts two steady weeks of music at Jamesville Beach Park. The M&T Syracuse Jazz Fest runs July 4 to 6. National Audio will set up staging that will stand through both events.
