Away we go

Every dog needs a fire hydrant.

My dear wife Karen and I decided that we’d get our steps in every day with our cherished rescue mutt during our Cape Cod getaway.

We’d go out the front door and say, you pick the way.

The plan included letting our aging rescue to pick how long we’d walk. Our routes at home have shortened as precious time together piles up. She knows she can’t go as far, especially since that bout with vertigo that scared us so much more than a year ago.

Anyway, a few days early on, our cherished rescue mutt got that determined look, went past that fire hydrant, and would not stop, an idea firmly in mind.

We asked if it was time to turn back to the rental house.

Nope. Onward.

Another turn.

Past the laundromat.

And there we were at the little park where she loved to go daily the handful of years past when we’d rented this house before it disappeared from the online site.

We all rested for a good bit at the picnic table in the shade until our cherished rescue mutt rose and signaled it was time for the astonishing long walk back to the back-on-the-site house.

More rest back home. Happy us.

  1. I am so glad she is remembering her old path. Aging does takes a toll on so many of us! I am being tormented with hip pain and can’t walk as far as I use to. So good for her and for all of you!

  2. thats lovely, and it had got me wondering how my aging rescue is going to respond to the walks this year on our familiar walks. Last year he led the way to our usual morning walk, did what he to, and turned and walked back up the hill to our holiday home. he no longer joins us on our usual evening walks up the hill to watch the sunset over the cliffs.
