‘Let’s Be Cops’ is fun, unfortunately

Some movies are so bad so fast.

In “Let’s Be Cops,” I immediately blamed the character Ryan. Played by Jake Johnson, the smirky guy was too smug, too dopey, too … too much for me to take.

Then I blamed the plot.

Pretend that you are policemen in Los Angeles? How dangerous is that? Please in the name of comedy, do not get young folks thinking about this as some sort of way to earn attention. I cannot like this movie.

Then the character of Justin, played by Damon Wayans Jr., balanced out Ryan’s bluster with his bashfulness, and although he liked some of the things happening when they played cops, he started questioning their motives and even looking up the penal code if they got caught.

The outlandish twists in the plot line were sort of interesting.

The full Friday night house was laughing at the jokes and cheering at the high points.

When the credits rolled on this buddy film, I had enjoyed it. Damn.

Have you ever sat through the first few minutes of a movie convinced it was wrong, wrong, wrong, and changed your mind? What movie and what happened? Who’s your favorite actor with Jr. in the last name, and what role won you over?

  1. I absolutely LOVED this movie!!! yeah it was far fetched at times and I was laughing so hard I was in tears when the big naked sumo guy landed on Damon but all in all if you’re looking for a good laugh this movie will do it for you!

  2. I haven’t even seen a commercial for this. I think times like this are when your job must suck. If you weren’t being paid to review, you could get up and leave. I think Cuba Gooding Jr. is the only Jr. I can think of that is awesome. That’s not to say there aren’t more; I’m just bad with names. 🙂

  3. i’m up for it, knowing it will be dumb and funny, and only expecting that, and that’s plenty sometimes ) my favorite jr. was efram zimbalist jr. from ‘the fbi.’ loved him and the show)

    • Beth, you come out of left field with that Jr., and I bow to you for that blast from our past. What a great show ‘The FBI” was to watch with my father, Monday nights on ABC, I’m pretty sure. Maybe paired with ‘Mod Squad’ toward the end of its run? Efram Zimbalist Jr. WAS the law!

  4. Outlandish and enjoyable… Each time I see the trailer, I think how foolish it looks, that they are committing a felony and would go to jail for impersonating an officer, so that must mean they foil a criminal in the end and everything somehow turns out okay. So odd how Wayans looks just like Papa.
