Spider-Man makes me glad that my superhero days are far behind me

I left my days of comic book superheroes behind in my teen years. Young teen yeers, actually. When presented with the fork in the road at age 13, I chose sports.

This weekend I went to see “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” with big hopes regardless.

What would modern technology mean for a guy who shot sticky stuff out of his fingertips as he tried to save the city from evil. How cool could it look when a villain played by Jamie Foxx was chock full of current.

Even the special effects looked flat. Maybe they were made for 3D and my olden-days screen just didn’t cut it.

The plot was boring. Super boring, let’s say.

Too bad. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield had pretty good chemistry as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, and Foxx looked like he got a charge out of releasing his energy as Sparkles.

That’s all the nice things I can muster up about this one. There’s plenty more negative stuff in my alternative weekly piece.

Are you a fan of movies that bring superheroes to the big screen? Who is your favorite superhero?

  1. Just found your blog via Don Charisma. Scanning your posts I found this on Amazing Spider Man 2. Wife and I went to a drive-in showing this past weekend. Confess I fell asleep about a third of the way into the movie. Wife said she could not follow the story. It was a double feature followed by “Transcendence,” which was not much better. I paid too much for the nap!

    • Glad you found me through Don. I review a movie every Monday for the Syracuse New Times site, and write a promotional tease here. On Thursdays, I provide my take on movie news. And every day, you’ll find my views on life. Welcome. I hope you come by and comment often.

Yes, naps are free at home, Merlin!

  2. First things first, I LOVED your review! Even the title made me giggle. Great job! 😀 My ONLY superhero is Superman, but NOT the guy from the movies. I only like the original black & white TV show (with George Reeves). I’ve never been to any of the Christopher Reeve movies or any after that, nor have I watched any of the newer Superman TV shows. But I do have one single vintage Jimmy Olsen comic book (which I’ve never actually read). LOL! Am I pathetic or what? 😀

  3. Sorry this movie didn’t stick with you. From past superhero movie fallacies, incorporating more than one supervillain in a film usually results with poor reviews. Aside my dislike for CGI, story gets lost when trying to develop characters.

  4. I love Spider-Man and really liked the first Tobey Maguire movie. I’m curious what you thought about that one, Mark (if you saw it). In general, I’m a sucker for a good superhero movie (some of my other favorites: the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie and the first Ironman movie). But I haven’t seen the first Andrew Garfield Spidey and now … I’m in no rush to see this one. Thanks for the super-written review, Mark.

    • I did not see any previous Spidey movie, Ann. Not a fan of the superhero genre. Alas, that may mean you may want to see this one, considering that you liked Tobey’s Spidey.

  5. I saw the original Batman by default (kids and husband). The original Superman. And….nada since. Wait, maybe I saw a SPiderman. I’m pretty sure this sums up my super hero experiences. 😉 I bet you didn’t see that coming now did you?

    • You and I, Colleen, two peas in a non superhero pod. Except I don’t ride a bike. And you don’t follow sports. And I don’t draw BlogHeads. And you don’t follow sports. And I I don’t walk over big rocks and rough terrain. And you don’t follow sports. Damn, you do a lot of stuff, my friend!

      • 🙂 On occasion I do. But you, my friend, are surrounded by activity and adventure. Just of a different kind. I kind of envision you as…..take this as I mean it….. Mary Tyler Moore stepping in to New York and the world swirling around as she swirled around. Throwing her hat up. Yes, I see you doing this. 🙂 And it looks awesome on you.

      • I take that as one hell of a compliment, Colleen. I do carry that kind of wonder about our world with me every day. Markie Tyler Moore, I am. Thank you for gifting me with that image!

  6. Afraid I preferred Casper the ghost to the super heroes Mark. My heroes were the cowboys I read about, and then dreamed about later when we got our first TV.

  7. though spidey is my favorite, (i met him when i was 7 and posted about it, and was disappointed), i’ve never really had a hankering to see the movies. i love a man in tights, but just not into the crazy over the top blockbustery superhero thing. i know there is a huge contingent of fans of anything comic book and superhero, so i’m sure it will make millions in spite of me. your review just sealed the coffin on this one for me, well written, mark.

    • I am quite sure that a legion of comic book fans think I am either dumb or ignorant and most likely both for panning Spidey, Beth. But that is the life I must lead.

Thank your for the praise of my review, lover of men in tights and acquaintance of Spidey. I like your blog Spider-Man story way more than thel movie …

  8. The kid and I made a deal long ago that superhero movies would be seen in the theater whenever possible (since they fit my definition of true “popcorn movies”). From what I have heard from others, this has me worried, especially putting out the money for this one and then X-Men coming up soon. I may have to pull the “mom card” and Netflix-queue this one instead.

I can’t pick a favorite hero, so I go for my favorite anti-hero: Deadpool.
