When a studio goes back for another bucket from the well, movie-watchers will wonder if what comes up this Time will quench their need, cue the gag reflex, or maybe even make them thirst for more.
Director and co-writer Jake Kasdan has come up with a refreshing tale in Jumanji: The Next Level. With screenplay help from Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, Kasdan has reimagined this third installment of this video-game-gone-wild premise with tasty layers of one-uppance.
SONY had allowed a whopping 22 years to go by between the original romp that featured Robin Williams (RIP) and Kirsten Dunst and the 2017 follow-up Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. That one brought together shining stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black as the in-the-game characters with pleasing regular folk from the real world who had stumbled into the game during high school detention. The chemistry and adventures worked on many levels.
This time, Kasdan and company upped they game with a big stirring stick.
Danny DeVito and Danny Glover are added as real-life characters who also get drawn into Jumanji with the same crew as the last time.
When Grandpa and Milo, respectively, get there to join Spencer and the rest of the old crew, personalities are switched.
They must learn from the past and adapt to the new surroundings.
Awkwafina is added, too, to further spice up the adventure.
When the end of the game comes, real life awaits.
Don’t take the Blu-Ray out of the player or switch channels on the device.
Something swift their way comes that foretells of a very interesting chapter four.

Mark…you changed my mind on this one. I adored the first and without much thought had not planned on seeing Jumanji: The Next Level….out of fear of a let down, out of missing Robin Williams, of the movies being closed, …well there really was no good reason. But you have never steered me too far off course Mark, and I am wanting to see it from reading your most excellent review. Thank you and stay safe.
