The day I met Elle Macpherson and lived to talk – well, write – about it

I had forgotten all about my face-to-face with supermodel Elle Macpherson.

It was a 25 years ago today, I’m reminded by my former colleague at the big daily, Johnathan Croyle, who now puts together an interesting look into the paper’s historical archives for a feature on syracuse.com.

Today his take is titled Vintage photo: supermodel Elle Macpherson leaves men tongue-tied in 1991

Yes. True. All of it. I was the reporter who accompanied photographer David Lassman to chronicle the momentous appearance for the people of Central New York who would find the big daily on their doorsteps or the newsstand the following morning.

Johnathan gave some of my copy play, too, as you can see along with a second photography by David Lassman on his full piece if you click on the hyperlink above.

In short, though, I wrote:

(… (the men) jousted in line for more than an hour, snaking through the aisles pumped-up or suave, like so many Schwarzeneggers and Sellecks. …

“Hi, I’m Elle. How are you?”

Blank stare.

“Nice to see you today.”

Open-mouthed gape.

“Glad you made it.”

“Thanks,” one talkative man responded.

“When it’s their turn, they pretty much say the same thing. Not much,” Macpherson said after the 90-minute autograph session.

“There’s not really many witty or exciting comments. I guess they think I wouldn’t understand them if they got creative,” she added.

And now I remember how the publicist whisked me into a storeroom in the back of the store for a brief moment with the model after the session with the men of Syracuse had concluded. Professionally, I gathered myself and asked her what she thought of the process as she straightened herself and got ready to depart for who-knows-where. I listened to her answer, scribbled it into my reporter’s pad, went back to the office, and recreated the scene for my little story.

When I got home from work, I do believe my then-wife asked me how it went, me meeting the beautiful Elle Macpherson. And if I remember right, I smiled widely and said something along the lines that there wasn’t much I could say about it.

What situations have left you with not much to say? What would you say if you met a supermodel? How do you think I handled the assignment?

  1. I find it hard to think of you as tongue tied!

I was in London in 1974, seeing Vanessa Redgrave in a play with my acting teacher. He made all of us students go back stage to meet her, primarily because he wanted to. I stood next to her as she said “do you want autographs?” I’ve always thought autographs are rather silly, and so got tongue tied when she clearly expected me to hand over my program for one. When I hesitated, she said, “Well, I don’t HAVE to.” I was embarrassed. I still have that autograph somewhere…

  2. Ha, ha! Pretty cool! I once met Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer of Iron Maiden at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. He looked at my sister and I and said, “You look like the most interesting people in here.” And we had nothing to say… doh!
