Wet, those six innings were

We enjoyed the five hours we spent at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y. this past Saturday, my dear wife Karen and I with our New York Mets-loving friend Steve Vicik Jr. and his lovely wife Kristen.

But it was wet.

How rainy was it as our Mets and the Cincinnati Reds played to that 1-1 tie through six innings, you ask?

Determined fans.

Determined fans.

Fans of all ages and sizes braved the weather in many places in oh-so-many ways until the umpires decided the water was too much for the players, the field, and oh, yes, perhaps themselves, too.

A rain delay that became more.

A rain delay that became more.

They waved the grounds crew to roll the tarp onto the infield about two hours after the game had started at 4:10 p.m., or just after the Mets had failed to push in what could have been the winning run despite loading the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning.

  2. We now have a minor league here in P’cola, the Blue Wahoo’s. It is nice to finally have some local ball. Growing up, I was an O’s fan through and through. Still am. A Memorial Stadium gal though. I know, I know, dating my self. I have never been to Camden Yards and now they are saying it is old an needs to be replaced. Yikes almighty! You know you’re getting old when your hometown is going on their third stadium in your lifetime.

    • In my college years as a Terp, DE, and subsequent four years working at the Prince George’s Journal, I went to many games at Memorial Stadium. Cal Ripken Jr’s career start years. I loved that old joint, but remained a Mets fan. I’ve never been to Camden Yards. I can’t believe it can be too old. No way.

  3. I hate rains! I think that’s what my next post is going to be about. Rains.

    I personally prefer umbrellas to raincoats. Raincoats are messy and you really feel like you’re sitting inside a green house. Raincoats just absorb all the heat and retain it there. 😛

    • In hot weather, yes, raincoats can make you bake and broil, Shooby Doo. At sporting events, though, umbrellas tend to be frustrating because they block sight lines from the people sitting behind you and cause, shall we say, frustrations that boil over.

  4. Not seeing any pro sports on TV since left Miami to Greensboro, NC. Unless you get the very very expensive sports package offered by Time Warner. Nothing even on radio. Miss the Marlins and Yankees games. But they do have Marlins’ minor league Grasshoppers here and will see a game soon.

    • That’s not too good for you, Carl. No ESPN on your Time Warner basic? They have a couple baseball games a week, I know. Enjoy that Grasshoppers game. Minor league ball is much fun. I hope you can take your dad. Have a great day.

  5. Isn’t it funny how we won’t go out in the rain and sit, like, on our front porch (without a roof). But give us a game to watch or a bike ride that needs ridden—and rain be damned! 🙂

      • Hehehehehehe Not meaning to laugh at you, cuz, but we um are running in the same problem here. What a disappointment this summer has been so far …. Well, when one is given lemons, one makes lemonaide. 🙂

      • Question: *hesitating for really NOT wanting the answer* Are some of your trees beginning to turn like they do in Autumn and are you seeing some birds beginning to flock? The reason I ask. 😦 I am here!!! WHAT!????? It is ONLY July 1st!!!! Please, cuz, give me some hope today.

      • OH GOODNESS!!!! You have given me HOPE. We are sinking in mud here, cuz, and some trees and birds are acting a wee funny. Tomorrow sunshine is being called for so hopefully we can get dried out. Our lawn has become a swamp. I also have to jump in and attend my Roses again addressing disease and insects. Many of my Roses have yet still to flower, and I don’t think they will due to rain and insects. 😦 BUT!!! You have given me a Ray of Hope!!! Thank YOU!!!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

      • I think so too. Treasure the photos I have managed to get. I do. Tell Karen only 6 of my bushes out of 32 total, flowered. My ground Roses flowered but instead of the bloom staying, they died back fast. 😦 I give us credit for even trying with the Roses this year. I have one image coming that is a winner, so She will give us all Hope that next year’s yield will be better OR the weather will finally improve and we will have Roses all the way until October. There is always HOPE.

  14. I like the large Pepsi sign photo and the one showing the field. Bright red in one and lime green in the other. Beautiful images, crisp and clear. I lost my latest umbrella, Mark. Too much to keep track of around Mom’s.

  15. Was there on Sunday, Mark, for SU Day at Citi Field. It wasn’t quite as wet as what you experienced, but it was still uncomfortably soggy. Saw the looooooong continuation of your rain-shortened game, plus half of Steven Matz’s stellar debut before we had to hit the road.

    • And you saw Otto throw out the first pitch, Kevin! You had the better of our two days, I’d say. I hope years from now you’ll be saying “I was at Amazin’ Matz’s debut …”

  16. You captured the rainy loveliness perfectly! It seems like the landscape is more green and blue and yellow when viewed through a rain droppy lens.
    I don’t mind rainy baseball games at all – as long as I’m warm!
    I can’t pick a favorite picture because I like them all. I hope you had a great time 🙂

    • We had a great time, Michelle. A rainy day at the Mets’ park is OK. We only go every three years or so! Of course, a sunny day would be better when the trip is five hours each way. As far as the temperatures, it was chilly, in the 60s. We had jackets under the rain ponchos, thankfully. It was a 4:10 p.m. start, so by the time the umps called the tarp out, it was maybe in the 50s. Thanks for your kind words about my iPhone 6 work, my friend. ❤
