Celebrating the rich basketball history

August 9, 2022 5:00 am

Syracuse’s great players stand tall.

I finally got to see the downtown Syracuse basketball mural orchestrated by significant city impresario Frank Malfitano with my own two eyes.

Magnificent.

Dolph Schayes, Earl Lloyd Jr., Manny Breland and Breanna Stewart look as if they can reach out and touch you.

That’s the way to span a city’s rich basketball history. Great six-story work, artist Jonas Never.

  1. Mark, I loved Big East basketball back when the Orange would have Madison Square Garden rocking. With all the musical chairs of conference realignment, maybe someday they’ll be back there. Who knows? An original founding member of that conference, they’re one of the most iconic brands in basketball. That’s a great mural and definitely does the city proud. Thanks for sharing.

    1. The Carrier Dome in the Big East days was a place to be for sure, Bruce. I was fortunate enough to be writing a column for the big daily the game that a freshman by the name of Pearl Washington hit a half court shot at the buzzer to beat Boston College to show the league what was to come. I had to huddle up like a turtle while the bodies hurdled over press row to storm the court! Thanks for your Big East recollections about the Garden magic.

  5. I do like watching basketball. Inside the gym. If one sits at the middle of the court, it would be wonderful for exercising the neck horizontally.

And looking up at the mural would be good for vertical movement.
