Unless you’re a bonafide film buff whose expertise and passions go back to the black-and-white days, you might now be familiar with the work of actress Gloria Grahame. Even though her credits on IMDb.com run 64 projects long and includes the 1953 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Bad and the Beautiful and she earned a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame in 1960, Grahame is not exactly a household name.

That did not stop director Paul McGuigan from working hard on the screenplay crafted by Matt Greenhaigh based on the memoir by Peter Turner for the SONY Classics 2017 release.

And thanks to the great work of Annette Bening as the don’t-count-me-out American actress in the autumn of life and Jamie Bell and the summer-Brit Turner she so thoroughly won over, this is a love story to remember.

They’re bound to be together, happily in California for a sunny spell at her home and then determined to show how much they care back in his family home in Liverpool in the U.K.

What is unspoken between them is horrible at first, tragic in the middle and unbearably sad at the conclusion.

Really, though, they don’t care much what others make of their passion for life and each other as they fight through their differences and make the most of their similarities.

These two must have been something in real life, for sure.

The film version of themselves surely are winning.
