You never know when you’ll fall in like with the spies next door

Opposites sure do attract. Movies like Keeping Up With the Joneses wouldn’t have it any other way.

This action-adventure-comedy directed by Greg Mottola from a screenplay by Michael LeSieur sends a godly secret agent couple played by statuesque Jon Hamm and Gal Godot undercover into an Atlanta cu de sac populated by the scrupulously ordinary husband-and-wife played by not-quite-so-zippy Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher.

The Gaffneys, HR cubicle farm worker Jeff and home-based interior designer Karen, may be dull parents but dumb they aren’t. Upon introduction, they’re aware that the Jones, travel writer Tim and fashion consultant Natalie, seem to be something much, much more.

What ensues is 1 hour, 45 minutes of espionage on both sides, sly and silly stuff with enough gags to make the Blu-Ray on the flat screen an enjoyable watch as the four discover things about each other they want to know and would never guess.

Strong points and weak spots develop. Car chases and shoot-outs are unavoidable.

There are bad folks to identify, flee, capture.

All of a sudden, there may be true feelings in false identities.

Hamm and Galifianakis play off each other well as the stud and the goof, while Gadot aloofly stands out as wonderful and Fisher shines as her comic foil.

What’s your favorite Jon Hamm role, and why? What’s your favorite Zach Galifianakis role, and why? Do you enjoy Gal Gadot or Isla Fisher more, and why?

  2. I thought Jon Hamm was great in “Mad Men” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” I loved Zach Galifinakis in “Birdman” and I heard him, yesterday, in “The Lego Batman Movie.”

    • “Mad Men” is one of my favorite TV shows of all time, Ann, and Jon Hamm is one of the anchors. Kimmy Schmidt sure is a sneaky little show on Netflix, too. Zach is an acquired taste for me, and I’m working on that.
