Still not much pop to the leaves, but there’s orange to be found

I’m still lamenting the lack of color in the changing-of-the-leaves in my Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood.

Bit ‘o burning there.
Turning to brown.

Too much green still, and way too much brown in what has decided to give up the summer.

But that doesn’t mean Ellie B aka Dogamous Pyle and I had to settle for boring on our latest walk around a couple of blocks.

Many of my neighbors are ready to celebrate Halloween. So out front of their houses we spied the bright orange of pumpkins as well as any other color they chose to spruce up their decorations for Oct. 31.

Maybe they’re fishing for more trick-or-treaters with the early invitation via ghosts and monsters.

Some folks even mixed and matched with a harvest theme, too.

In any case, there’s color to be found around the Little Bitty. It’s just not up in the trees.

  1. Yes we plan on decorating for Halloween. We put up a Christmas tree. My boyfriend is Jewish but we still put up a tree for my son. I don’t know if he’ll put lights up. It looks nice in your neighborhood! I live in the desert so I rarely see trees change colors like this. It’s finally cooling down here. Today it’s about 85.

  5. I rent, so no property-decorating-rights for me. But I live in a relatively suburban part of the Bronx where people love their holiday decorations. Plus, the nights are now cool enough for walking around to see all the out-doing people are up to. As for the colors, I found some in Connecticut this weekend….

  6. The blaze of glory will come, even if later than usual. I don’t know about the trees where you are, but here, they seemed to take forever to green up this year, so perhaps they will be reluctant to drop their finery just yet.

  8. Great photos Mark. I especially like the one with the pumpkins and goblins. I live in an apartment so I don’t get to decorate. I love big pumpkins. 😀

  11. I enjoyed these pics. I always like the more autumn-theme Halloween decorations than the removable intestines in zombies decorations. I nearly gave in to a $10 Kohl’s harvest wreath yesterday, but I stood my ground.

  12. I thoroughly enjoyed this post, I am definitely one who doesn’t have a yard but my apartment building is all decorated and my personal apt is also decorated. The beautiful mums are just so colorful and the little haunted Halloween things you found to take photos of are great, Mark! Hope it is soon gorgeous in colorful array. I have resorted to one tree at a time taking photos. . . 🙂

  13. We have a neighbor that has made his entire front yard into a meeting place for ghouls and goblins. It is quite impressive and very scary to drive past at night.
    The only Fall colors I see are the Sycamore trees – their leaves are changing rapidly, not sure if it is because they have given up the ghost (do you like my Halloween pun?) because of the drought or they are actually changing color early for Fall. It’s hard to say.

  15. Those leaves need to get a move on. We decorate in a very British way – a bit half hearted looking compared to the way you guys do things. The major shops here are decorated for Christmas already. Too soon I think.

    I enjoy the decorations other people put out, but we’re not the people who do them.

  18. These are pretty cool. I like the first house your featured…something about the way the decorations blend in with the shrubbery. I feel like L.A. ‘does’Halloween more than NY. There are so many people in the film industry that just do their houses as if they were sets for a horror film…or maybe that was in NY too but just not near where I was. Living in an apartment, we usually don’t decorate but this year my husband went all out and bought these wonderfully tacky decorations from the 99 cent store. We may keep them up all year!!

  20. Both of the newest neighbors on my street have decorations out. As for me… I only have the authentic, real spider webs that continue to pile up around my front door no matter how often I go out to brush them off (Which isn’t often since I use the kitchen/garage door to get in and out). Well, that and my black cat Biskit who likes to peek out the window…

  22. I loke these 🙂 the third imagenis my favorite bc its warm and its ‘home’. We dont have a colorful fall where I live but I love decorating for each season…and Christmas is still my favorite 🙂

      • I might freeze to death if we had a winter full of snow!! It does cool down (you would most likely be hysterical over what I consider cold) and makes for a nice season … but Im not going to lie bathing suits soon replace winter coats by the end of January 🙂
