From green to yellow to brown

A warm walk with Ellie B aka Dogamous Pyle around the blocks surrounding the Little Bitty this first week of autumn did not reveal any bright reds or oranges.

No, this year the trees of our Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood appear to be going straight from green to yellow to brown.

I don’t know if the explanation can be laid upon the warmer-than-usual September nights.

All I know is that last year by this time, many trees on this typical man-and-dog loop were full of vibrant colors.

Not even the maple that stands in the middle of the lawn outside the Interstate Battery store two blocks over, a go-to for autumn leaves in majesty around here, could deliver this time.

  1. I took a ride to the country last Thursday bro Mark. You probably already know that. The trees are beginning to turn out there, and it is getting so beautiful. Spent today shuffling thru old photos for the pics I took years ago of the changing colors, and I think I have them loaded on my new site agw1611.wordpress.com, if you want to check out the new one. Gave it a whirl tonight after spending a boring day trying to figure out what to do next. Just doesn’t feel right with things mostly in place, and being able to walk thru both rooms without worrying about falling over something. Next energy spurt I’ll start working on neatening up the shelves in this room, making more space on them by putting the partial bags of stuff together in one container. Just the small stuff. Have a good one bro.

  2. After I read this, I started paying attention to our local trees the last few days. I do see less color than I usually see by now but a lot of trees are still green. The maples are that deep purplely red so I was very happy to see that. There was a sort of tree on one roadway that was just as you said, all brown, when I think there is usually more color. They just looked dead. Odd thing. I might have to go north into Wisconsin to really see the color

  4. Just what I needed, a colorful gift from back home. 2nd pic is my fave, love the color captured. And, no, it’s still terribly hot here…108 tomorrow?! Tomorrow should be the last blast of serious heat, please 😀

  9. I had heard that the colors would be delayed here because of the warm September, but not that they wouldn’t occur. We’re just starting to get greens changing to gold and red here in S. Jersey. I’m going to hope for a splendid display–but we’ll see!

  11. Sorry to hear fall has not arrived in the usual manner. It was in the 40’s here last night. My neighbor’s oak tree is beginning to blaze in yellow and red.

    I hope this is not heralding another uber-heavy winter for you!

  14. It’s very autumnal here – blue sky, nip in the air and leaves are turning. I love this time of year. When do you think you’ll get your first snow? 🙂

  15. I like across the street; looks like it’s coming at you. We’re still at “above average” temps, still in the 90s today. But we got a glimpse of 69 degrees this morning. Hope springs eternal. Or hope “falls” eternal, as it were.

  18. There have been no changes in trees in our area that I’ve noticed. We have a maple in the back that usually turns a gorgeous shade of red in the fall, but right now it’s still as green as it’s been all summer.

    And I’ve been so looking forward to taking those fall pictures – maybe I’ll have a chance yet.

  19. We rarely see any change in the leaves and when we do it’s not much. Also, we can expect it later in the year and this year is no exception. And, yes, it has been very hot, even by L.A. standards. I like the one of the tree you captured that is actually showing it’s fall colors. At least you got something there!

  22. It varies due to humidity and sunlight. I think last year was particularly splendid here and I’ll be surprised if we have another one like it. I love the fall though, no matter how vibrant, I’m so glad to be in it 🙂
