Brighter minds than mine have come up with some mighty big names for what I just saw in my Syracuse sky.
It was not just any old moon this evening, you should know. According to Robert Roy Britt writing on livescience.com, we started with a full moon and raised the ante with a lunar eclipse. We’ll have a super moon that will yield a blood moon effect.
Indeed.
Out front of the Little Bitty,
At peak, come 10:47 p.m. EDT, I was out front of the Little Bitty in the Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood, aiming my iPhone 6 toward the sky. I zoomed, and I shot at regular focus. I knew neither would do justice to the beauty I saw with my eyes.
It made me feel tiny, the grandness of the bigger moon with that hint of red.

Good Neighbor Tim came out with his good camera and a tripod. I walked up his driveway, and we shared the nice moment. I took a look through his viewfinder. Nice. He said he’d email me his work. I’ll update with the better photo when he does.

Hi Mark, I did not get to witness the whole event. I looked at the moon before I went to bed at around 11 or so and it was brilliantly bright with this enormous ring around it. These are some great photos. The moon looks more pink than red, I think they should call it an Erythema Moon, it is more the color of cellulitis than blood. I like that – Erythema Moon. Sounds creepier, more sci-fi.

Great pictures! It was cloudy here. We saw part of the eclipse, but the moon never looked red. Favorite sight: the moon, of course! 70% realist, 30% dreamer.

I had forgotten about the eclipse until I was on the Mecca patio for midnight break and someone mentioned it. Wasn’t sure what time it was supposed to be, but was told it was already over. Not that there would have been a sight to see anyway, they said it was too cloudy at the time to see anything. But those clouds were definitely gone by the bewitching hour, because the moon was directly overhead and as full and bright as I’ve ever seen it…

Thank you for the gorgeous pictures. I don’t need to go to the NASA site now! We were watching but the clouds obscured our view of the moon half way through. We saw the moon fully eclipse then did not get to watch it wax again.

Great pics! I missed the actual eclipse though… tried to stay awake, just couldnt! Great to see what I missed out on. The moon was spectacular even before the eclipse began.

Last night’s moon followed me on my journey home over my right shoulder as I travelled back from seeing my folks. It had been pretty impressive the past two nights as it travelled over the village and I took a few shots I may post here. But as the eclipse did not occur over here until 3 a.m. I decided to leave it for others to see and share their photos. You have some good neighbours, Mark. Thank Tim for sharing. Roy

Our moon looked like you photos pretty much. We had clouds earlier in the eclipse. I checked out NASA and they had a some nice views from our Griffith Observatory here in LA. But they have a telescope so it makes a difference.

Yes. Some people got some great photos. The Huffington Post had one of a huge moon, looked like in Europe. Ours just didn’t come up to what was expected. Earlier in the eclipse I could see a larger moon through the clouds but it was faint. If I tried to take a photo with my phone it looks like a marble. 🙂 or even smaller 🙂 But it is nice that we all were looking at it, yes. 🙂

Oh gosh Mark! So we actually went out tonight to see a friend’s band…left at about 7 looking for the moon for the whole 45 minutes over…nothing. Went in to see the band, by the time we came out it was totally in shadows and we could only see a sliver. Bummer. Good thing we have peeps like you to provide photos.

Yes, they were. Maybe even worth potentially missing the moon for. I heard the best view was going to be from about 7:15 -8:30. They played from 8-8:45 and the moon certain wasn’t visible before then. Actually, who knows if we ever would have gotten a shot of it at all.

Glad you got to see the eclipse. We live in a heavily wooded region. I’d have to drive a while to view the eclipse. But the star were certainly bright this evening.
Dreamer versus realist. . .hard to say, I like both.
