A return to Thornden Park to capture the summer look

In March, I figured Thornden Park was the right Syracuse location for my Photography 101 lesson in landscapes.

In addition to bringing you some stirring snow scenes, I promised a return to the location that sits high on Syracuse’s overall terrain for a handful of summer shots for comparison.

It’s moving toward the end of August.

Arches with climbers.

Arches with climbers.

The arches surely look different with life amongst them.

Same pines, different feel.

Same pines, different feel.

The pines feel less barren.

Leading the way.

Leading the way.

Steps to beauty, they are.

No man, no dog.

No man, no dog.

And, go figure, nobody was out walking on this beautiful summer day as they were during March.

The glorious sky.

The glorious sky.

And a bonus shot because I dig the sky so much.

Do you have a favorite four-season place to visit where you live, and if so, where and why? Where is your favorite summer spot to visit, and why? Which is your favorite photo, and why?

  1. These amazing photos will be fun to “revisit” in November when it’s cold and snowy! 🙂
I like the 3rd pic the best…the combo of the sky, clouds, trees and steps is perfect…a very peaceful setting! 🙂
My fav season is Autumn…I like everything about it…colors, smells, temps, food, holidays, etc.! 🙂 I am fortunate to live in a place that has four seasons. In summer I love to be near water…doesn’t matter…lake, ocean, river, waterfall, pool, wading pool, bucket, mud puddle… 😉 😛
    HUGS!!! 🙂

    • Autumn is awesome here as well, Carolyn, for all the elements you mention. And add: College football starts Friday, and we have season tickets to Syracuse in the Carrier Dome and truly enjoy making an event of it beforehand up on the campus hill. Come leave-color time, I will return to Thornden Park and take more photos to post, my friend. ❤

  2. Oh, bro Mark, my fave among these photos is the arches covered with roses. I can see lots of sky here at home, but I never get enough of roses. I’m so allergic to them I can only look at the photos and remember the bouquet of their smell, but can’t get close or I’ll sneeze for hours. On the farm there were so many places to walk I could choose a different one each day. And for one of my favorite places when I was driving, check out http://dixiebox.wordpress.com/it's not exactly rocket science//not-an-angel-today for a photo of one from Panther Creek Park. Probably more to the addy than that, but I’m too tired to check right now.
Six days, seven and one half hours now, and counting down.

    • Agreed, Kerbey. Looking up, they are from my vantage point. I did take a shot looking down, too, but kept it in my portfolio this time. Maybe I’ll shoot that one again there come fall. Seems appropriate to me.

  3. you were right to go back, and i love the archway the best. my fav place here in ann arbor is the arboretum, a giant park right in the middle of town. you feel like you are in the country right away.

    • You’re fortunate to have an Arobretum, Beth. We have one of those, too. It’s called Pass Arboretum, a nice park on Tipperary Hill, the west side of the city, across from the Burnet Park nine-hole par-three golf course run by the city and the Zoo. I don’t know what they call yours, but I like the sound and feel of Ann Arbor Arboretum. 🙂

  4. You photos a wonderful, Mark. If only with our skies were that blue right now. We are more in line with BBQ evergreens served with a side of smoked citizens until the rains start sometime this fall.

I especially love the trellis with the roses. I want to walk down that path. 🙂

    Thanks for the sky shots!

      • Thanks Terp-just some rain we can handle that! It is still a tropical storm at Sea we’ll monitor each day but it’ll probably land on the Southwest Coast (opposite) us. Time will tell. No I am not worried all precautions have been taken and our Emergency Mgmt. Team County wide are on alert as every County in the State is. Thanks for concern. Gatorette

  5. Beautiful shots, Mark, and a great spot for all seasons. I have a few places like that, but the best is Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pa. on the DuPont family grounds near the border of Delaware. It’s been a go-to place for family photos for generations. ☺

  6. Mmmmm – I think my favorite picture is the one with the arches because I wish I had arches like that in my garden, and flower beds that were so tidy. My boarding school in Australia had arches covered in Wisteria and when the Wisteria was in bloom it was the most amazing site, with all those large blossoms hanging down. We would pretend it was a castle and the blooms were chandeliers, lighting the way along the path. It’s funny how memories are triggered. Actually I love all the photos, but wonder why there are no people out there enjoying what looks to be a most beautiful day.

  7. Love all those photos, Mark, but the first one especially. What I love about NYS is its moisture and, yes, those four very distinct seasons. Here, we have Big Bear and any mountain town as the only places to see a real autumn and winter. But I grew up in that environment you are in and I truly miss it. You are so lucky!

    • Yes, Beth, you have to travel for autumn, and I merely have to look out my window. I know I’m fortunate about that. And you realize what you’re missing because you’re a native of Central New York. Come winter, though, I’ll be envious of your LA warmth, you know.

  8. I like the photo with the stone stairs best Mark. The composition and the metaphorical possibilities are neat. I’m thinking about getting a smart phone – my phone contract is up and my carrier is offering free smart phones to sign a new contract. I have a question – how do you get the pictures from the phone to your computer? – is there a cable or a storage device or do you have to e-mail them?

    • Might as well take advantage of the free phone with the new contract, Paul. My photos go to where I need them via my WiFi and the cloud. When I had all of that backed up, I emailed them. I’m not sure if it can be done with a cable, still, because I don’t use a laptop, just my iPad, keeping it all in the Apple wireless family. But you could ask your carrier about that, I’m sure.

  9. You sure do get some great shots with that I phone don’t you. I love the sky as well. Didn’t the sky seem bigger out west. Almost makes you giddy. That is why my fav is the second picture, with the bent tree. It has the biggest shot of blue.Does anyone ever play on the field with the goal posts.
