From the slightly Wayback Machine, my video of the Heath Brothers

The Heath Broithers at Onondaga Community Coilege in Syracuse, N.Y, on Oct. 31, 2014.

On Halloween, I was lucky enough to catch the Heath Brothers performing as part of the Legends of Jazz series at Onondaga Community College.

Great show by 89-year-old saxophonist Jimmy Heath, his 80-year-old drummer brother Tootie and their younger mates Michael Karn on upright bass and Jeb Patton on piano.

I wrote about it here.

During the show, I slipped down to an empty seat in the front row, sturdied my iPad air, and shot 8-minutes-plus of cool music, bridging two songs, panning from Jimmy to Tootie to Jeb and catching Michael on the back line. Fine work, I thought, when I watched it at home. But back then I was trying to load video through the WordPress platform, and it wouldn’t. I left it alone.

This past weekend I started my YouTube channel at last.

This morning I will post a piece here, linking to my weekly community blog column on waer.org, about the next chapter of the Legends of Jazz Series in Storer Auditorum, vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant, who performs at 4:30 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.

So I decided this would be a fine time to share that almost-forgotten video I shot of the Heath Brothers.

Enjoy.

  1. Well, I don’t know who The Heath Brothers are, but good for them for carrying on in their 80s! 🙂 And good for you for starting your YouTube channel! 😀

  2. Sorry it has taken so long to see this Mark. Things are a bit haphazard and catch as I can here. Someone (Not me) had a knee scope today and I have been running quite hither and fro for days with over time and getting this and that done. Now I must go to the land of Youtubers and subscribe! 🙂 And I enjoyed this!

    1. Oh, no, a knee scope for the not-you in the house. Worse than you, somehow, you know? I feel YOUR pain, MDB Colleen as the runner and fetcher and doer. Thanks for watching and liking and subscribing to my video minimalism. 🙂

      1. 🙂 I have a feeling there will be an abundance of eclectic music to enjoy! Today has not been a bad day. He’s actually been up and about a good bit. They said tomorrow and the next day will be much worse. So we shall see how that plays out. I feel worse for him. Because he is very much a doer around here. And I have to work tomorrow. So I hope the pain doesn’t come in until I get home!!!! Wait….I hope that doesn’t mean “I” am the pain….

  6. I enjoy music of all kinds and this is amazing work with dinosaur age machinery, ha ha! It reminded me of the way real talented filmmakers use the older cameras to get a ‘different feel’ to their end results. I am now a week away from watching “Boyhood,” which has years of Richard Linklater’s film done. I am on the waitlist for the library… I am not sure you would like it but there is a good story about how a kid makes the best of his life in an uncomfortable situation, in the film, “The Way Back.” He really finds his way, finally his mother sees the light and a different (negative and slightly abusive) role for Steve Carrell.
Jazz is one of my favorite types of music, but I don’t feature it enough on my blog, Mark! Great post!

Enjoy “Boyhood.” Wow, it’s a winner.

Like “The Way Back,” you say? I made it my No. 1 favorite movie of 2013!

      1. So glad you liked this movie, it has a different role for Steve C. but was a great one for nostalgia and so sweet how the boy works all summer and learns so much from his experiences at the pool. Thanks for letting me know about the 2013 award, since I am sure I was not following you YET! Smiles!

      1. I’m sure you will. Do you know I once went to an ear doctor who told me that listening to jazz was bad for my hearing? He had a really strong accent so I kept asking him again and again if that was what he said and he just kept nodding his head. I still can’t really be sure.
