No more trending up, until I spot the moon in the sky

I missed the full moon because of clouds. I'm glad I caught this one two nights later in Cicero. N.Y., at top right.

I missed the full moon Wednesday every time I looked outside our home in the Syracuse city neighborhood of Eastwood. Too cloudy. I’m glad I caught this nearly full version tonight in Cicero. N.Y. Look to the top right.

My bowling hopes were high.

The average going up, up, up.

But splits were everywhere.

Conversions were few.

Pins stood. Winking. Laughing.

First game. 152.

Second game. 154.

Final game. 127.

Enough to make the spirits sink.

Until the exit to drive home from Bowling Green Lanes.

A look to the sky

Spots a vision of the bright moon.

No longer full, two days older than that big event.

But it’s huge tonight as it sends me rolling along, no longer feeling below average.

Did you see this week’s full moon, and if so, where were you at the time? Do full moons make you feel or act differently? Do you look to the sky as a matter of course every night, and if so, what do you check for?

  1. my youngest is studying the night sky, so she’s been keeping a moon journal. So for once I was paying attention and able to appreciate the blood moon, etc. Bummer about the bowling scores, though your low would be a great game for me.

    • Isn’t it great when the young ‘uns are studying interesting stuff like this? Enjoy it while you can, because soon enough it will be math too difficult for you to figure out, Liz. Good thing the bowling scores are kept by the computer. D’oh. Just kidding. I can handle that. Just keep me away algebra, trig, calculus …

  2. I am a big Moon-watcher, Mark! I did hear stories of nursing home patients/clients/residents changing behavior during Full Moon periods. I like Native Americans’ culture, their respect for all of nature, so I started awhile ago, including moon phases in my monthly calendar. Mark, I am so glad you closed your post with the comment, you did not feel ‘below average’ anymore! You are NEVER below average, my friend! You are way up high, in my esteem.
I am sorry I don’t get here as often as I should, by the time I arrive all the great comments have been made! I saw a ‘pink’ moon, but never a full-fledged reddish Blood Moon. Oh well, as you said, it was in all its partial glory the other night!

    • Pink moon is special, Robin, and I have noticed that you incude the moon phases in your monthly look-ahead post, Robin, and I love that about it! The First Nation people are wise about those natural connections, most certainly.

  3. Mark … We didn’t get to see the ‘blood’ moon as it was overcast. So I had to content myself with viewing photos of that event. There were times, as a reporter and now as a teacher, when someone will invariably remark that there’s a lot of craziness. Then, they’ll ask “Was there a full moon last night?” I don’t know if there is a link, but I’d love to know.

Sorry to hear about your bowling scores. Take heart. I once scored 180 – for a TOTAL of 3 games. 😉

    • The moon is always blamed for a lot of behavior, isn’t it, Judy? It is an interesting topic. And 180 is a tough score for three games, certainly. Wow. Way to stick with it for that third game!

      • It certainly was, Mark. Especially as it was the total for all 3 games. I don’t remember – nor car e- what the lowest score of the 3 was. My greatest bowling thrill was watching my Dad, and later, my best friend knock all those pins down. 😉

  4. Ugh, I can relate to the bad bowling. Last Friday my entire team bowled horrible. One of our opponents even rolled a 300 against us (First time I’ve ever been on the same pair as a perfect game). We lost the final game by 203 pins… pretty impressively bad for a four-person team handicap league! I think I’ll blame it on the moon…

    • Isn’t it something to be on the spot for a perfecto? Last year a sub FOR our squad rolled one. I practically keeled over in excitement for him. He was ultra cool, saying it was his No. sixtysomethingth. Oh, well, for us normal gents, it’s a special sight.

Yeah, to get pummeled by 200 in a four-person handicap league is very impressive. Lunar-cycle worthy, my friend. 🙂

  5. Very poetic, Mark, different from your regular writing style–loved it! I was in the kitchen Wednesday night and noticed the bright light through the window–it was la bella luna looking down on us. It makes me recall one of my favorite movie scenes, the grandpa in “Moonstruck” when he takes his group of little dogs out for a nighttime walk, and tells them, “Guarda la bella luna!” (“Look at the beautiful moon!”)
They all howl at it together, including him. Nice post! 🙂

  6. 127 is awful. And you call yourself an athlete? Pish.

I actually got to see the lunar eclipse a few days ago. It was the only time in the past 12 years that I found it advantageous to leave the house at 5:10 a.m. to start my daily commute. It was beautiful!

    • I’m glad you got to see the beauty of the stellar wonder, my friend.

And you are right. I golf. I bowl. I have good holes. I have good games. And then I am brought back to reality with a thunderous PISH.

  8. Bowling scores are just testing you. You’ll shatter those scores next time.

Full moon and behavior? I know there are those who do not believe in the connection. But I do. I work in a service field. And I do believe the full moon has an impact on the physical body which does indeed impact the mental health of many people. I truly am not making lite of this, it’s something that has time and again proven it’s self to me and those I work with.

  9. I do not usually go out at night unless I’m going somewhere specific because it’s sticky and humid and I’m happy in the air conditioning. 🙂 What happened with bowling? 😦 I think you got stuck with a slanty lane. 😦 Better luck next time, my friend! 🙂

  10. I love the moon Mark. It sounds cliché but every time I look at it, I imagine the people I love, who live far away, are looking at it too, and I feel connected.

Mark, your bowling poem sounds like the beginnings of a twangy country song haha! 😉
